Decreased diffusion capacity on lung function testing in asymptomatic patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) does not predict future lung disease. A finding of low diffusion capacity in asymptomatic patients with SLE, with or without antiphospholipid syndrome, does not necessarily require further evaluation and imaging and may improve spontaneously over time. PubMed, Lupus, 01/16/2015. (Also see: Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Value of systolic pulmonary arterial pressure as a prognostic factor of death in the systemic sclerosis EUSTAR population. An estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure >36 mmHg at baseline echocardiography was significantly and independently associated with reduced survival. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 01/17/2015. (Also see: Diagnosis of Scleroderma Heart Involvement)

Treatment for heart attacks can be reversed to help hypothermia patients. It's more likely today that the patient will be warmed back to health using a machine hooked up to a catheter that transfers heat to the patient's blood. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 02/16/2015.

Frequent involvement of central nervous system in primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS). Neurological involvement was the first symptom of pSS, emphasizing the importance of considering this diagnosis, especially in young females with neurological symptoms without other evident cause. PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 2015 Feb;35(2):289-94. (Also see: Symptoms and Complications of Sjogren's Syndrome)

Cardiac biomarkers in systemic sclerosis: contribution of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin in addition to N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide. The easily obtained biomarkers may be useful for systematic evaluation and stratification of SSc patients, especially to identify those at risk of pulmonary hypertension. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 01/20/2015. (Also see: Scleroderma Cardiac Involvement and Scleroderma Biomarkers)

FDA approves new treatment for varicose veins. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new technique for treating varicose veins by sealing them with a clear liquid that turns into a solid adhesive. Washington Times, 02/20/2015. (Also see: Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Nailfold capillaroscopic changes in dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM). Significant differences were observed between PM and DM with higher frequency and mean score of nailfold videocapillaroscopy changes in DM. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2015 Feb;34(2):279-84. (Also see: Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis)

Emerging roles of innate immune signaling and toll-like receptors (TLRs) in fibrosis and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Recent advances and emerging paradigms are highlighted for understanding the regulation, complex functional roles, and therapeutic potential of TLRs in SSc pathogenesis. PubMed, Curr Rheumatol Rep, 2015 Jan;17(1):474. (Also see: Skin Fibrosis)

Deadly kidney disease can make a sneak attack. Unchecked, chronic kidney disease contributes to heart disease, hypertension, weak bones, nerve damage, kidney failure and death. Chicago Tribune, 02/20/2015. (Also see: Kidney Involvement)

The effect of aerobic exercise training on fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis: a meta-analysis. There is evidence with low risk of bias that an aerobic exercise program is effective in reducing fatigue among patients with RA. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 01/26/2015. (Also see: Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Decrease of LL-37 in systemic sclerosis (SSc): a new marker for interstitial lung disease (ILD)? The circulating levels of LL–37 in SSc patients were investigated as lower LL-37 levels may be associated with the development of ILD. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 01/20/2015. (Also see: Pulmonary Fibrosis Biomarkers and Scleroderma Biomarkers)

How SLUMPING could be causing your headaches: Increased pressure on the neck not stress or dehydration is to blame. Experts say 80 per cent of all tension-type headaches are caused by muscles in the neck, made worse by bad posture. Mail Online, 02/20/2015.
