MEDICAL NEWS

Association between systemic sclerosis (SSc) and bone mineral density (BMD) based on twelve observational studies. We conclude that patients with SSc may have a lower BMD level than healthy controls. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 2014 Jun 4. (Also see: Osteoporosis in Scleroderma: Bone Density)

Psoriasis linked to worse quality of life for family members, too. Both psoriasis patients and the people who live with them say psoriasis negatively impacts their quality of life, and both groups tend to report more depression and anxiety than people not affected by the condition. Reuters Health, 06/06/2014. (Also see: Psoriasis and Depression)

Glucocorticoids and irreversible damage in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Prednisone causes damage in SLE, but doses less than 7.5 mg/day and methylprednisolone pulses are not associated with damage accrual. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 2014 Mar 27. (Also see: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Glucocorticoids, Steroids (Prednisone) Warnings)

Telemedicine Applied to Kinesiotherapy for Hand Dysfunction in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis: Recovery of Movement and Telemonitoring Technology. Telemonitoring of self-administered kinesiotherapy programs is a promising approach to the rehabilitation of hand functions in patients with rheumatic disease. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2014 Jun 1. (Also see: Hand and Joint Involvement)

How Low Should We Go? (When It Comes To Blood Pressure). A new study suggests getting blood pressure as low as possible may not be critical for people with hypertension. Time Healthland, 06/17/2014. (Also see: Heart Involvement)

Cigarette smoking, antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) and vascular events (VE) in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Among ever regular smokers who were aPL positive, there was a strikingly high frequency of former VE and the underlying mechanisms and temporality between smoking, aPL and VE need further investigations. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 2014 Apr 1. (Also see: Antiphospholid Syndrome and Antibodies in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)

A longitudinal study of ankle brachial pressure indices (ABPI) in a cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The severity of vascular disease in patients with SSc is associated with increasing age, smoking, limited cutaneous disease and positive anti-centromere antibodies. Reassuringly, in most patients ABPI remains stable over time. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford). 2014 Jun 6. (Also see: Vascular Involvement and Digital Ulcers)

Sitting Can Increase Your Risk of Cancer By Up to 66%. For a change, the cancer-promoter isn't something you eat or breathe, but something you do every day. Time Healthland, 06/17/2014. (Also see: Cancer)

Impaired endothelial function in patients with undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD): a follow-up study. The data suggest that the presence of inflammation and autoantibodies provoke endothelial cell activation and/or injury in UCTD patients. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 2014 Jun 10. (Also see:Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease)

The expression profile of the toll-like receptor (TLR) family in scleroderma (SSc) dermal fibroblasts. TLR5 and TLR10 expression is increased in SSc fibroblasts. TLR5 itself may have suppressive effects on collagen expression, and its overexpression in SSc fibroblasts may be the negative feedback against tissue fibrosis. Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology, 14 June 2014. (Also see: Skin Fibrosis)

Do Not Take Daily Aspirin If You Haven't Had a Heart Attack, Says FDA. Taking a daily aspirin is not necessary for people with no history of heart problems, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says. Time Healthland, 05/06/2014.

Perioperative management of antiphospholipid antibody(aPL)-positive patients. There are limited data on which to base recommendations and periods without anticoagulation should be kept to an absolute minimum for patients with a history of thrombosis. PubMed, Curr Rheumatol Rep. 2014 Jul;16(7):426. (Also see: Antiphospholid Syndrome)
