MEDICAL NEWS

High blood pressure may boost glaucoma risk. Long-term high blood pressure may increase the risk of glaucoma. HealthDay, 01/07/2015. (Also see: Symptoms and Diagnosis of Normal Tension Glaucoma)

Rheumatoid vasculitis: an update. Rheumatoid vasculitis remains a rare yet challenging extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis with high morbidity and mortality, despite aggressive use of disease-modifying therapy. PubMed, Curr Opin Rheumatol, 2015 Jan;27(1):63-70. (Also see: Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Vasculitis)

Survival of adults with systemic sclerosis following lung transplantation: A nationwide cohort study. A diagnosis of SSc may confer an increased risk of death 1 year following lung transplantation compared to a diagnosis of ILD, but this risk is similar to that of PAH, a widely accepted indication for lung transplantation. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 01/07/2015. (Also see: Lung Transplants)

Compression stockings may ease sleep apnea. Wearing compression stockings during the day may slightly improve sleep apnea at night, a small study suggests. Reuters Health, 01/09/2015. (Also see: Treatments for Sleep Apnea)

Placebo-induced decrease in fatigue: evidence for a central action on the preparatory phase of movement. This placebo-induced modulation suggests that placebos reduce fatigue by acting centrally during the anticipatory phase of movement, thus emphasizing the important role of the central nervous system in the generation of fatigue. PubMed, Eur J Neurosci, 12/19/2014. (Also see: Fatigue)

Relationship between quantitative radiographic assessments of interstitial lung disease and physiological and clinical features of systemic sclerosis(SSc). In the absence of pulmonary hypertension, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide provides the best overall estimate of high-resolution computed tomography-measured lung disease. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 12/01/2014. (Also see: Pulmonary Fibrosis Diagnosis)

Many Who Take a Daily Aspirin Don't Need It. Many healthy people take a daily aspirin to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, but a new study has found that more than 11 percent of them should not be doing so. New York Times, 01/13/2015. (Also see: Systemic Scleroderma Cardiac (Heart) Involvement)

Predictors for health improvement in patients with fibromyalgia (FM): a 2-year follow-up study. Recently diagnosed FM patients who report fewer physical limitations may experience more improvement in health if they are at work and have a positive attitude towards participating in an offered health-care intervention. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2015 Jan;34(1):133-41. (Also see: Treatments for Fibromyalgia)

Rituximab in diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (SSc): should we be using it today? We summarize the therapeutic use of rituximab in SSc and the basic science evidence suggesting that B cells and autoantibodies are the primary drivers of fibrosis in skin and lung tissue. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 07/01/2015. (Also see: Causes of Scleroderma: B Cells and T Cells and Scleroderma Clinical Trials)

How Vitamin D May Fight Colon Cancer. Higher levels of vitamin D have been associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer in many observational studies. New York Times, 01/15/2015. (Also see: Vitamin D Deficiency and Cancer)

High fidelity between saliva proteomics and the salivary glands' biological state defines biomarker-signatures for primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The SS-related molecular landscape conveyed by saliva showed great congruence with histopathology features evoked by SS and advances understanding of this disease at a molecular level. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 12/29/2014. (Also see: Diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome)

Three cases of bullous morphea: histopathologic findings with implications regarding pathogenesis. All of our cases showed hemorrhagic content in the bullae, which suggests local trauma as a mechanism involved in bulla formation. PubMed, J Cutan Pathol, 11/04/2014. (Also see:Rare Types of Morphea)
