MEDICAL NEWS

The Impact of Pain on Anxiety and Depression is Mediated by Objective and Subjective Sleep Characteristics in Fibromyalgia (FM) Patients. There is a high prevalence of sleep problems in individuals with FM, which may play a role in the relationship between pain and anxiety and depression. PubMed, Clin J Pain, 2014 Oct;30(10):852-9. (Also see: Fibromyalgia and Depression)

Mortality, Recurrence, and Hospital Course of Patients with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc)-related Acute Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction. Acute intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare gastrointestinal manifestation of SSc with few data existing as to its demographics, clinical course, outcomes, and mortality. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2014 Aug 15. (Also see: Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction)

Lung Cancer May Be Detected With a Thermometer. Detecting lung cancer may be as simple of taking the temperature of your exhaled breath, say researchers. Times Healthland, 09/08/2014. (Also see: Cancer)

Memory B cell subsets and plasmablasts are lower in early than in long-standing Rheumatoid Arthritis. The onset of RA is characterized by higher percentages and absolute numbers of naïve B cells and could represent a promising biomarker of outcome. PubMed, BMC Immunol. 2014 Sep 4;15(1):28. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis and B Cells and T Cells and Autoimmunity)

Lipoic acid (LA) plays a role in scleroderma: insights obtained from scleroderma (SSc) dermal fibroblasts. Dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) not only acts as an antioxidant but also an antifibrotic since it has the ability to reverse the profibrotic phenotype of SSc dermal fibroblasts. Also thiol antioxidants, including N-acetylcysteine and LA/DHLA, could be beneficial for patients with SSc. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther. 2014 Aug 15;16(5):411. (Also see: Lipoic Acid and Skin Fibrosis Research)

Study asks whether artificial sweeteners may drive diabetes. Scientists studying the effects of artificial sweeteners in mice and humans say they have found that eating them may increase the risk of developing glucose intolerance, a risk factor for diabetes. Reuter's Health, 09/17/2014. (Also see: Causes of Diabetes)

Fatigue effects in daily life activities of kidney transplant recipients. Fatigue is directly related to the level of activities of daily living, causing less ability to perform activities in the higher level of fatigue, which is in the immediate postoperative period and only settling fully on the 9th postoperative day. PubMed, Transplant Proc, 2014 Jul-Aug;46(6):1745-9. (Also see: Fatigue and Kidney Transplant)

Influence of Pulmonary Vascular Reserve on Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). The present study demonstrated that exercise-induced PH was common in patients with SSc. Exercise-induced PH might be closely associated with the factors affecting reduced pulmonary vascular reserve in patients with SSc. PubMed, Echocardiography. 2014 Aug 8. (Also see: Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hypertension)

Sit Less, Live Longer? If people need motivation to get up from their office chairs or couches and become less sedentary, two useful new studies could provide the impetus. New York Times, 09/17/2014.

Managing treatment fatigue in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) on long-term therapy: the role of multiple sclerosis nurses. Patients with MS on long-term therapy may suffer from treatment fatigue and poor adherence. MS nurses are ideally situated to help patients cope with any factors that may limit adherence. PubMed, Patient Prefer Adherence, 2014 Aug 19;8:1093-9. (Also see: Fatigue and Multiple Sclerosis)

No association of atherosclerosis with digital ulcers (DU) in Japanese patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc): evaluation of carotid (IMT) and plaque characteristics There were no differences in serum lipid level, carotid IMT or plaque score between SSc patients with and without DU, suggesting that atherosclerotic changes are not primarily involved in the development of DU. PubMed, J Dermatology, 2014 Jul;41(7):604-8. (Also see: Athersclerosis and Digital Ulcers)

Neck manipulation may be associated with stroke. Blood vessel tears that lead to strokes may be associated with — but not necessarily caused by — treatments involving neck manipulations, researchers say. Reuters, 08/11/2014. (Also see: Stroke and Mini-Stroke (Transient Ischemic Attack, or TIA)
