Hello Everyone:
Hope everyone is doing good. I wondered how many of you have stomach problems?
I am really having a lot of difficulty after discontinuing Zelnorm. I really have a hard time going to the bathroom, not to mention the stomach aches. The worse part is the terrible flatulence I have constantly. It is really embarrassing I take gas-ex all day long, drink tones of peppermint tea and take beano before meals. Nothing my doctor has given me has worked. I have tied everything. I recently had a colonoscopy which showed I have diverticulitis. I was treated with antibiotics for that. I also have Gerd, but it is controllable with nexxum. Any one got any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Marie

You have described a problem which I am sure plagues many of us. There are a number of causes and/or contributing causes, so it is very much a process of elimination to find your own solutions. Perhaps you can find some useful advice in the ISN Bowel Dysfunction page. My husband and I both have a problem caused by different things: his is dairy, fibre, cabbage and similar vegetables, mine is caused by eggs. He doesn't chew well and ends up swallowing a lot of air with his food. I have found that my digestion works better if I have a serving of yogurt every day. For me, peppermint tea causes more upset. We keep a box of stick matches on each of our end tables. Lighting one seems to eliminate the odor (or at least distract the olfactory receptors). ;)
Warm wishes,

Hi Marie,

I haved slowed motility and take Motilium which helps. Also, I take Prevacid for GERD. But when the gas problems hit, nothing stops it. I sometimes just have to stay home , it gets so bad. I have tried just eating fresh food but it just seems to come in cycles. My gastro doctor says it all has to do with slowed motility. Somedays I think if I could contain all the gas , it would fill a hot air baloon! What a trip that would be. Good luck with everything. Susie 54

Hi Marie,
I went through bottles and bottles and bottles of gas medicine and still I felt it only lessened the toots. Then suddenly the toots went away. Weird. Food like onions, broccoli and lots of fiber cause so much pressure it hurts, so I avoid them… I also had stomachaches and pains. I felt as though all my mail should be forwarded to my permanent residence in the bathroom. Then suddenly that ended too. Weird. Scleroderma is so weird.

I have a daily regime to follow to try to keep things moving. I stay away from wheat and dairy as I'm allergic to them which makes it worse. I also take flaxseed daily, and digestive enzymes with each meal. Then when that doesn't work, I have to take laxatives.

I know some take reglan which helps.

I'm really sorry you're having troubles too. It can make you feel terrible I know.

I, too feel your pain!!! I was on Zelnorm and I was fortunate enough to have had it refilled for a three month supply four days before it was pulled from the market. I have about a month's worth left and I DREAD the day I don't have any more!! I was on Reglan before the Zelnorm came out. It helped, but it put me to sleep. Now that's saying a lot because I am a person that even tranquilizers, Heavy duty pain killers, etc don't phase. I agree with everyone else, sometimes you just have to give in and stay in
Peace :)

I understand how miserable this is. I was on Zelnorm too. I am on other meds now. My problems are all motility issues. I had a gastric emptying study done and my food empties very slowly. I've found that Gas X and Phazyme help with the gas. I actually have gastroparesis so I have to be careful what I eat.
