Had my annual review today. My "superior" had taken the opportunity to inform me that although I'm salaried, that does not necessarily mean an eight hour day and perhaps I should plan to stay longer to show initiative. Little does he know the constant pain in my foot for the past three months that warrants me to scream in my house with windows closed, the limited use of my arm and the constant freezing AC blowing from when I get there at 7am till I leave purple at 4pm. I feel it's my right not to advertise my medical condition, but have chosen to let HR in on my circumstances in case of emergency. Extending my day? I'm lucky to get myself up each day at 4:30-5:00am, get myself in there and work to the best of my ability to complete an 8 hour (9 when you can't leave at lunch) and go home to scream from the extreme pain each day from the ulcers on my big toe. I have the one on my finger somewhat under control, but I guess due to the area and the body weight projected on the area, the toe is taking so long to go. I've told my rheumatologist twice and my Internist of this as well. People at work are beginning to notice my limping and make shift bandages and asking if I'm alright. I dread the fall, as now I'm passing with open sandals. I dread having to put my feet in closed shoes and the pain it will produce. I get so exhausted yet when I lay down at night the pain worsens from not being upright. With the volume of posters on this site alone, I'm amazed that there is not much known or recognized in the medical field for this disease! I've learned on the government website that disability for this condition requires two (maybe more?) deficiencies to become eligible, if at all. I've attempted to get in bed three times this evening, but had to get up to walk the pain off. It's going to be another 2:30 night like last night.

Sorry, just had to vent a little. Just wish this pain would go away.

Tru,
I am so sorry that you are having to deal with so much pain with your ulcers. What is your rheumatologist doing to help? Have you been given anything to help heal them and to prevent future ones? I've provided a link to the digital ulcers (hands and toes) page. Maybe you'll find some information that will help you. Rather than worry about putting on close toes shoes, I think you need to be concentrating on how to get these healed. You should not be suffering like this. I really feel for you.

It was very smart to tell HR about your situation. I did the same thing with my last employment and the head of HR was great. He really worked on my behalf. Even though he was able to get me out of a lot of physical requirements of the job, the hours and daily stress eventually became too much. I now work out of the house where I can set my own temperatures and hours. I hope you can get some relief soon from both the pain and the stress of your job.

Hey Tru,

In my opinion - as humble as it may be. I recommend you fill out paper work for FMLA ( family medial leave act) to protect yourself from discrimination. I had problems with this myself when I worked for an employer. It truly is amazing and quite sad in terms of the lack of concern people have for other souls instead of the almighty dollar. Without the proper paperwork in place you could find yourself in a very compromising position if your health ever plays a role in decreased time at work. OR, even if you are the best employee in the world they could become afraid that in the future you won't pull your weight and so come up with some other crazy excuse as to why they need to let you go.

Look out for yourself, most likely your employer won't.

Hi Tru,
Before I decided to go on disability, I used my intermittent FMLA, which protects your job and benefits while providing you the time needed for doctor's appointments, or take care of yourself. Basically you can 480 hours off of unpaid leave for anything related to your condition and they cannot fire you for that... at least that's my understanding.

I didn't tell a whole lotta people around my office either and people did notice that I took quite a bit of time off for doctor's appointments. I also had a heated pad, blankets and slippers at my desk for my raynauds.

Hi Truman,
There are medications your dr can prescribe for your ulcers. My dr prescribes viagra and it works well. He had to go through the insurance company to get approval first. Figuring out the right dose and working through the headaches in the beginning was tough but it heals ulcers and pretty fast. You might want to talk to your dr about this. Definately get your self covered at work! Talk to hr again and figure out what will work best for you in the long run.

Hi Truman~

It brings tears to my eye to hear about all the pain your going through. I am so sorry for the lack of consideration on your employers part. Definately look into FMLA. Some employers actually pay for the time you take off due to your illness. My employer does. I work for at&t. I have had an ulcer on the tip of my middle finger for almost a year and with the information that I've learned here I am going to insist that my dr prescribes me something to heal it. They are so incredibly painful. I really feel your pain Tru.

May you get some sleep and relief from you pain very soon!

Hi Tru,

I feel your pain and share the experience. I used to work in a place with air conditioning and my hands were always blue, I'd shiver, and my feet would be like iceblocks. I used to keep putting more socks on, and changing them over all day, and people would laugh, but I was freezing, just because of the air con. And as everyone else thought it was a pleasant temperature, I just had to feel cold and put up with it.

I wish I could give your boss a reminder of what is reasonable, and what is undue pressure and bring him/her back to a world where you respect people.

Tru,
I've had no ulcers since I've been on Revatio (Viagra) and Nitro-paste. Revatio can be a little pricey but Nitro-Paste is fairly inexpensive. You should check these out.

My old boss really emphasized staying late and coming in early even if there was no work to be done. Once I filed the FMLA he was more lenient - I think it was because HR was involved.

The pain was so great today that I called the rheumatologist who said I needed to go to my general practitioner. He said I need to see a Vasco Surgeon immediately and the toe was in extremely bad shape. He feels I have a blockage somewhere. He has put me out of work until the 17th. He also said he called the rheumatologist and told her he felt she was not addressing the situation aggressively enough. She presently has me on no medication other than gout medication, vitamin D and Baby Aspirin. She told him my symptoms did not warrant additional meds at tis point, but I'm glad my general practitioner is looking out for me and will discuss this with my rheumatologist. My general practitioner prescribed two antibiotics and the "notice" that as of today, it's not an "option", I cannot smoke any longer.

Tomorrow, my new agenda is in force. I just hope the doctor's meds of antibiotic therapy kick in this weekend, because I'm, physically drained. Will also keep doctor's appointment on Tues. with the general practitioner and Vasco; echo on Wednesdy; I can shop, but not necessarily buy.

Just today, HR called and said the same thing. She's filling out the paperwork and sending if off tomorrow via messenger. She said although it's slated for a week, she would feel better if I filled out the paperwork "just in case".

Truman,

Best wishes with all you have to do and go through. Quitting smoking is no easy feat although quitting for dire health reasons may make it a little easier.

I have been smoke free since the day I found out I was pregnant 10 years ago.(That made it easier for me) I quit cold turkey with no crutches or aids. (pat-pat-pat) :D

Just occupy yourself with another activity when the cravings come and soon your cravings will go away. A craving will pass within 10 minutes or so. So just clench through it. Try to stay away from people who smoke - that helps.

I will be rooting for you!

I am concerned that your rheumatologist is not doing enough for you. I'm glad your general practitioner seems more on the ball. I'd get another rheumatologist! You SHOULD be on SOMETHING if you have Raynaud's and are having horrible pain with ulcers....some of us take calcium channel blockers or Viagra.

Quitting smoking will do a lot ot help you heal. Also........sorry but no caffeiene either - you can still go decaf.

Truman, You said you can shop but not necessarily buy. Each day that you are smoke free you put money in a box that you would have spent on cigarettes. Each week you would have close to $50.00 spending money. Each week go and spend it on something that will make your life easier. Or something that you just would like to have. Some weeks you will save for the bigger items. At first my husband thought that was cool. Then he started getting jealous that I was getting to spend this money and he didn't. So I started smoking again. After about 6 months he decided he liked the smoke free environment better. The house was cleaner because I had to do something with all that free time on my hands. So, he said Go and Spend your allowance. I have been smoke free just over two years. Now, I save up for the bigger things. We spend the money together. You can only use so many new clothes and new kitchen appliances and trinkets. It is a great incentive to stay smoke free. It was the hardest thing I have ever accomplished. But, I did it. It wasn't even hard when I didn't cheat. All the other times I tried to quit I would cheat and just have a couple drags or one cigarette. This time I didn't cheat. You can't cheat one single time. If you do you have already given up on yourself. I quit for my kids, my husband and I always broke that gift I gave them. This time the gift was for me. I didn't want to cheat myself of life. That is what I was going to lose. This hopefully, wasn't a lecture. Maybe incentive. I sure hope so. I wish you the best. I've been there believe me I know it is hard. We are stronger than we ever could imagine. I hope each day and hour becomes easier and easier for you. Sheryl
