Hi, folks. Nothing is quite as scary or exciting as venturing into a chat room for the very first time. OK, LOTS of things are more scary and exciting, but there are still some simple things you should know.

To get into the chat room in the first place, click on Chat in the purple bar above. It's as simple as that.

Once you arrive, have a quick read of the welcome screen which tells you that the same rules apply as anywhere else on the forum and that all chat logs are archived and may be read by staff.

At the bottom of the screen, there is a single bar into which you type your message. This is called the input field. After you type your message, click the button on the right to send. When each message is sent, it goes into the larger box above. You will see notices when forum members enter or leave the room.

On the right side is a picture of who is in the room. The red pawns are for chat administrators.

Avatars are the little pictures next to the names in the main box. You can choose one for the session by clicking on the the masks icon just above the typing box. A java applet will open and in a few seconds the selection of available icons will come up for you to choose.

Please note that if you click on a link which takes you away from the chat, you will be disconnected. If you want to continue to read what everyone else has typed, do not leave the page. It is possible to have a tab or other window open, but if you have other functions open, you may find the chat runs slow for you and may even kick you out periodically.

It is a good idea to click on chat when nobody else is around so you can experiment with all the buttons and see what they do. Try on an avatar for size. Type some text to see what it looks like. Find a buddy to try it out with.

NOTE: The chat is set up to use your logon id rather than your user name. If you have a login id you want to keep private, please PM me and I will be happy to change it for you to match your display name.
Warm wishes,
Jefa

I am new here - my wife is an "S" patient so I am very interested in learning some more information about all of this. Great that this site is happening. We are as you could not tell in Orlando Florida. DS

Orlando, welcome to our group. I hope you and your wife will enjoy this wonderful group. I am not far from you while vacationing. I am in Lakeland for the next few weeks. It is so wonderfully warm here. Michigan, my home 9 months of the year, was to cold for me to go home to. So, my husband left me here to soak up a few more rays and keep my spirits up. I am so happy. If you have questions just ask away. You will get quick answers most of the time. Again Welcome, Sheryl
Strength and Warmth,
Sheryl

Orlando
I am new to this site as well - still feeling a little uneasy as to what what to do - never was on a bulletin board or in a chat room before this. I was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension secondary to scleroderma 1 1/2 years ago - as you may know through your own experience / wife's experience there is no telling how long I have had S - secondary symtoms seem to add up until you get the real diagnosis! I live in Oregon and am jealous of the location you and Sheryl are enjoying. We had 30 minutes of sunshine today - although temp was cool the radiant heat was nice. Not long enough, though. You mentioned you were interested in learning more about this - wasn't sure if you meant S - new diagnosis - or the forum. If you have any questions that relate to things I have experienced I would be more than glad to discuss - don't be offended if you never hear from me again - I am not convinced I will be able to find my way back here again! I wish you the best - Sue

Hi Jefa
I am new to the forum and have a couple questions. When I signed up my time zone was set inaccurately - I apparently did not select correctly - was wondering how I could correct that. Also. am not clear how / where you select an Avatar. Thanks so much for the help - Sue

Hi, Sue

Both things can be set through your control panel. Look above you in the yellow toolbar and you will see a link called My Controls. Under Options and Board settings you can change your time zone.

The avatar setting is up a little higher in the same left hand column. Once you get in, there are a number of avatars you can choose from divided into categories for ease in selecting. Let me know if you need any further assistance.
Warm wishes,
Jefa
