February 6 - 14... Our vacation
Posted 21 February 2008 - 10:13 AM
One year ago, we vowed to one another that we would go to Hawaii in February of this year. Since that time, many things transpired to make this a very much needed therapy for those of us who went. 10 of us flew out the same day/same flights.
Surprisingly, I was as nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof... especially after the security check! I had done it completely wrong, putting lotions/gels, etc in the wrong bag... believe me when I say, I say... I sailed through security withflying colors the rest of our trip ! Funny, though... my hubby didn'tlol Three times, the alarm went off, as he tried to pass through... the culprit was the inhaler he had forgotten was in his pocket! Coming home, the security sensor must have been much more sensitive, because his nebulizer set off the alarm. Again, clad in his brightly colored Hawaiian shirt, he and his nebulizer were scrutinized, finally concluding a hand lotion ingredient (petroleum-base), apparently was the problem.
We were on a smaller plane, as far as Seattle and then Horizon Air to Seattle. Leaving the single-digit temps and arriving in Honalulu withtemps in high 70s, low 80s... well, suffice it to say that my body welcomed the humidity and warmth without problem!
My skin LOVED it!
We had rented a beach house... not only did it have a beautiful pool withgecko "mascots" and a variety of birds to entertain us, but it was only across the street to the beach/ocean! This all worked out very well for the 13 of us. Those who love to cook, had those of us who loved to eat their cooking. Those who love to BBQ... you guessed it .
I had always heard how exorbitant the prices were, but I was actually pleasantly surprised.
Upon our arrival, we picked up 2 of the 4 vehicles we would have at our disposal, during our week stay. My hubby's son flew in from San Francisco at 10PM on Feb 6 and then picked up his reserved vehicle the following day.
Our niece's guy had driven her car to Denver to watch an Avalanche game and then flew in to Honalulu on Thursday night, Feb 7. The first 2 days, we just relaxed around the pool, basked in the sun, took pictures, visited and picked up groceries for our stay.
On Feb 8, we all went to Waikiki to shop, go to the beach and take in some sites. Feb 9, most of us took a day trip, skirting the entire island, stopping and taking pictures. We stopped at the Dole Plantation, where some walked through the maze, some road the train on the tour offered and Granddaughter and I chose to walk through the gift store and then walked to another spot, where we took pictures of each other as pineapple people, etc! We spent alot of time giggling!
The 3 youngest, 1 grandson-in-law and his friend, both 26 and our grandson age 22, called our trek the Kwik-Mart Express... because they thought they should have been able to go surfing and snorkeling, yet when invited to take one of the vehicles, they were afraid of getting lost !
Feb 9, The younger set decided to wait at the beach house for a friend who didn't get to the house until AFTER we got back from another great excursion! When they left, the rest of us spent time in the pool, walked to the beach, took pictures, or just enjoyed the beautiful day! (Before leaving on this vacation we promised ourselves we would be free spirits, doing exactly as we pleased... and I feel we did)
Sunday, Feb 10, the 9 who were going to the Pro Bowl left about 8am, as we were staying at Oahu and the stadium, w/traffic... is a ways away... plus, my hubby and his youngest son, were needing to pick up WILL CALL tickets I had ordered online for them. As it turned out, they got to their seats on 1/2 hr b/4 the game started! Hubby got quite a sunburn, as the seats they were in ended up being in the sun, the 2nd half of the game (he chose not to take the hat I asked that he take withhim). Luckily, the Aloe/Lanolin I slathered his face/ears with cleared everything up nicely!
Those of us who didn't go to the game, went to Waikiki, shopped for souveniers, lunched and ended up on the beach!
Monday, Feb 11, we had reservations at Paradise Cove for a Luau... my hubby was very pleased/proud when his, daughter, granddaughter, niece and I all wore our newly purchased Hawaiian dresses that evening! The guys looked dapper too! The last set performed, we had ideal seats... directly in front of the stage! Just as I thought my camera batteries were done, they rallied and allowed me a few more pictures of the hula dancers !
Feb 12, our last full day there, we said our goodbyes to Eddy's son, who was flying back to San Francisco that afternoon... then, the rest of us drove over to the Pearl Harbor Memorial site. Once done there, everyone but my hubby, his youngest son and I... left to do other things. The three of us proceeded on to the USS Missouri... it is even larger than we ever imagined... that was good time spent! When the 3 of us got back to the house, we felt bad for the younger ones, because they got back too late to go snorkeling... must not have been meant to be! Niece's guy, she and granddaughter went to the airport and he flew back to Denver, where he would drive Niece's car home, from there.
On Feb 13, we arrived at the airport a few hrs early, where we went through agriculture security, ate lunch, checked our luggage to fly on through...even though we would be spending the night in Seattle (12 hr layover). On Valentine's Day, we got home about 2PM and at 5:30PM, I was getting a "baby-fix" with my 3 wk new grandson, Brayden and the rest of the family ! When I saw my 7 y-o grandson (the "big brother), I gave him a hug and told him I sure did miss him and he said, shyly, "I missed you too, Grandma", with a big smile on his face! That's what "Grandmahood" is all about, isn't it Grandmas?!
I don't know if I'll ever have another opportunity to go back to Hawaii, but I know it is so beautiful and I am so grateful we were all able to be there together as we were. I savored the time there and will not soon forget it.

Hubby & I eloped on a grassy knoll by the beach in Maui about 2.5 years ago.
Our family knew but it was too expensive for them to come.
So it was just hubby, I, priest & rock star photographer.
We can't wait to go back!

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that you are able to go too. It is so worth it!!!
Other than my honeymoon, over 21 years ago, up the Oregon Coast... this was so wonderful. I NEVER thought we would EVER do this... until we landed, the reality didn't hit
Oh peanut... that is so neat... I hope we can ALL go back... My hubby had been to Maui also, but if we get another chance, I would love to go to Maui, as he loved it there.
Sweet... it IS... it is so beautiful. Pictures just don't do it justice... the many beautiful colors of the water is something I couldn't get over. I sure hope I can post some picutres... but then, I haven't got my pc figured out yet!
A secret... at the airport, b/4 we boarded to fly to Seattle... on our way home... I wrote/mailed postcards to relatives at home Anytime b/4, I was too busy drooling over the sites!LOL

Granted, the islands also have size, but it's so beautiful!
Emmi, I sure wish you could find a way to go, as it's something that would not be regretted, I PROMISE!
Actual;ly, the granddaughter is already planning our trip to another island for NEXT year! W
We WERE going to rent a houseboat on Lake Powell (by Las Vegas, NV), but the consensus, me included ...
is Hawaii is the place!
Oh Emmi, I truly envy your trips to Spain and the Carribean... if there's humidity, I suspect that you'll do fine. One thing that was told me... by a local... wear at least a 50 screening lotion, as the sun is completely different than what I'm used to. As it turned out, my skin did well.
When are you going on your wonderful trip?
Lisa, I hope you get to Hwaii, sooner than later... too!
Huge Hugs for all of you!
