Hi Everyone,

Please continue to keep Gareth in your thoughts. He was airlifted from our little hospital to Hershey Med Center last night due to suspected blood clots in his lungs, worsening pneumonia, and fluid buildup. Today, they took off over 650 cc's from the left lung. They could easily have gone up to 1000 cc's but he started to jerk around too much. Tomorrow he will have more testing done. He is 'out of the woods' now and sleeping quietly. They are trying to rule out all sorts of 'why this happened' ....hopefully, tomorrow will give us some answers.

Thank you,
Margaret

Hi Everyone,

Another day at the hospital....hurry up and wait and, then, go no where!!! A resident made the mistake of telling Gareth that he would probably be going home today after his X-ray. Well, the X-ray wasn't good. It looks just as bad as before they took off all that fluid 2 days ago. So, then, we waited for a heart echo to r/o pulmonary hypertension and another CT scan to check for the amt of fluid and other possible blood clots. They are leaning towards everything being sclero/UCTD related. Of course, we won't get the results of todays test till tomorrow. To say the least, I am scared. This came out of no where....he was doing so well on the Plaquenil. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts.

Take care, Everyone.

Hi, Everyone ,

He's home!!! I am not sure he's suppose to be but he wanted to go and they said there was nothing they could do for him ' at this point.' He still has 4-500 cc's of fluid around the left lung but they *think* it will dissolve. The exit report said they took off over 800 cc's the other day. He has not had a fever the whole time and started to act 'normal' after they took off the first 800 cc's. His heart echo, done yesterday, was normal....yeah, no pulmonary hypertension!!! They still have no real reason for the fluid and he's been handed over to his rheumatologist because everything points to scleroderma related. The lead doctor that said it was okay for him to go home is mystified by Gareth. He should be acting very sickly yet shows no signs of shortness of breath or pain from the remaining fluid. The resident wanted him out before he caught something 'bad' from being IN the hospital. They even used the ' f ' word....flare.....in describing their final reasoning for handing him over to his rheumatologist.!!!

Happy New Year to all of you......and thank you so much for keeping him in your thoughts!!!
Margaret

Margaret, I'm sure you are one happy mom...having Gareth home.

However, I also know the resident was absolutely right in being concerned about Gareth contractng something, while in the hospital. My mom got triple-staph pneumonia while in the hospital, ten years ago...got out , one month later, went to anotheer county, go t even sicker, nearly died, was alone and hospitalized for 3 more months there, flown home...w/o O2 on the entire plane trip...I was not a happy daughter, believe me!

Take extra care of yourselves, Margaret!

Big Hugs to you both!
