hi I'm trying to do some fact finding for my Aunt she has Systemic Scleroderma - I've seen websites which recommend herbal remedies. I was wondering if anyone has tried these or knows if they are safe or woud have side effects. thanks and best wishes

Hi Angelaec67, welcome to the Forum. I'm sorry your aunt has systemic scleroderma. It's very nice of you to be supportive - I hope we can do the same for you.

We have a good page on herbal remedies that might help you with sound information. It's one of those subjects that raises a lot of controversy (as does just about any 'alternative' treatment).

Regardless of any claims for effectiveness, it's important to realize that because herbal remedies are classified in the USA as dietary supplements, there is little if any control over them. For example, you can't be sure how much of an 'active' ingredient you might be getting, if there are any contaminants, how/where they were manufactured. And, because they can interact with other medications and also cause some problems on their own, it is really important to consult one's doctor before using herbal remedies or other supplements, as well as tell them just what and how much of any these one is taking.

Best wishes,

Hello Angela

I think we'd all like to be able to go au natural when it comes to medications because however beneficial they are they still come with side effects.

However I found from personal experience that herbal supplements taken with out any form of consultation with a G.P. (general practitioner) can make you even worse. I took a supplement, before sclero, thinking it was helping me only to find out I had to stop it weeks before going into hospital as it could cause bleeding! I took another, again pre sclero, to improve my keep fit regime and ended up with vision problems. Not being a quick learner, with sclero, I tried another supplement and about 30 to 40 minutes after taking it felt sick, light headed and very regretful at having taken it at all!

From now on if it's not prescribed I ain't taking it.

Take care.
