Hi Guys

I thought I better run something by you. About a week ago, I got sick with a bad cold (better now) but for the past 4 days I have been unable to eat much because I feel full (overly so). I feel like I can't breathe well and my stomach and abdomen are visually swollen. I've been having small bowl movements daily, so I haven't really thought I was constipated, but just to be sure I took a laxative last night and nothing. I feel a bit nauseated with all of this too. Now it's started to worry me.

Any thoughts?
Warm and gentle hugs,

Pamela

Hi Sweet,

Abdominal distention can be basically harmless (from eating too much or swallowing air) or be caused by irritable bowel syndrome or partial bowel obstruction. See:
Scleroderma Bowel Involvement and the article for abdominal distention listed there.

The distention alone probably wouldn't be so much of an issue, but since you also have other symptoms, you should check with your healthcare provider. A simple thing would be to call your local E.R. (since its the weekend) and ask to be screened by a nurse, who can advise you whether you can safely wait awhile on it or if you need to be seen pronto.

Sweet, I think you need to call the doctor and let him know what is going on. I agree with Shelley. Sam

Hi Sweet,

Another option for cause, is fluid retention in the abdomen (ascites) and this is usually treated by diuretics. Do you check your weight often? If you have a stable weight and it has recently increased by 3-5 lbs you could suspect fluid retention. I have this often, and the feelings you are describing fit my experience to a tee.

Hugs, Lizzy

Hi Sweet,

This is so typical for me that I call the gastric distress "round two" of any cold I catch. It generally hits a couple of days after the cold is gone and can take up to a week to clear out, but so far has only been an annoyance, and not a permanent problem. It's the same thing with laxatives not helping, and those can give me nausea as well. Yes, I'd see your doctor to make sure it's only your round two and not something more serious. Hope you're doing better soon enough!

Hugs and best wishes to you,
Elehos

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the input. I am feeling a little better. I did take a diuretic and "got off" 4 pounds  I have also been eating very very small meals at a time and that has helped. I am being very careful what I eat. I have a call into the doctor this morning but haven't heard back yet.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Sweet,

A question for you...does it feel like your digestive system is just not working? Reason I am asking is that is what happens to me at times. Seems like nothing is moving and I am full and bloated. It does pass but if I don't take something to help the process along I become very ill with headaches and nausea.

Hope you are feeling better and please keep us posted at to what the Dr reports.

Best wishes!
Sue

Hi Sue,

YES! That is exactly how it feels. OK for now I was told to increase my ground flax seed. If this doesn't help then he will put me on something to help empty my stomach faster.

Thanks for the reply, Sweets. I know exactly how you feel. This is one question I have asked every Dr and they have no explanation, even my gastro Dr. My relief for this is an over the counter gas medicine. My gastro told me that it was ok for me to take and that it would not harm me. Email me if you want to know the product.

Best wishes to feeling better soon and keep me posted on any new info on this. I am really relieved to hear I am not alone with this. I have noticed that I start to have these symptoms when I am doing to much and am really tired or if I am stressed.

Sue

Hi Sue,

Could you please email me with the 'over the counter gas medicine' your GI doctor recommended for you?

Thanks,
Sakar
