What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)?
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that can cause a multitude of symptoms. Lupus can occur in overlap with scleroderma and other autoimmune diseases. Scleroderma is also frequently misdiagnosed as lupus in its initial stages. (Also see: Autoimmune Diseases, Difficult Diagnosis, What is Scleroderma?, and Overlap Syndrome)
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE/LUPUS). MedicineNet.
Types of Lupus. The various types of lupus include Cutaneous Lupus, Systemic Lupus (SLE), Drug- Induced Lupus; Overlap Syndrome; and Neonatal Lupus (rare). Lupus Foundation of America (Also see: Overlap Syndrome)
Do Improved Survival Rates of Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Reflect a Global Trend? Despite the improvement in survival rates for patients with SLE the standardized mortality ratios are still 3-fold higher than for the general population. M. Abu-Shakra, MD. The Journal of Rheumatology. October 2008.

Scleroderma and Lupus
Overlap Syndrome : When lupus appears along with other autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma and polymyositis, it is called Overlap Syndrome. ISN.
Sclerodermiform linear lupus erythematosus: A distinct entity or coexistence of two autoimmune diseases? A Case Report. The coexistence of features of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus and scleroderma in the same skin lesions is very infrequent and has only been reported in 3 patients. (ScienceDirect) Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Vol 58, Issue 4, April 2008, Pp 665-667. (Also see: Overlap)
Systemic Sclerosis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus have Distinct Gene Expression Profiles in the Peripheral Blood Cells. These data show that a limited number of genes reliably distinguished SSc from SLE. Shervin Assassi. 38/38. ACR 2007. (Also see: Scleroderma in Overlap)
Sclerodermic linear lupus panniculitis: report of two cases. Lupus erythematosus panniculitis is a rare disease characterized by deep subcutaneous nodules, most commonly localized on the upper limbs and face. We present here the clinical characteristics, course and laboratory findings of 2 patients having linear lupus erythematosus panniculitis with localized scleroderma-like changes. PubMed. Dermatology. 2005;210(4):329-32. (Also see: Linear Scleroderma, and Overlap Syndrome)
Lupus and Overlapping Diseases
Pancreatitis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Frequency and Associated Factors - A Review of the Hopkins Lupus Cohort. Hypertriglyceridemia appears to be a strong associate of pancreatitis in SLE, but antiphospholipid antibodies are not. SLE patients with psychosis and pleurisy are at increased risk for pancreatitis. A. Mikol. JRheum. December 23 2009.
Thyroid Cancer in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): A Case-Control Study. These data suggest that the prevalence of papillary thyroid cancer in SLE patients is higher than in age-matched controls, particularly in patients with thyroid autoimmunity. A. Antonelli. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. November 11 2009.
Prevalence, predictors and outcome of vascular damage in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Vascular events (VE) occurred in 26% of SLE patients, predominantly as atherothrombotic disease. VE prevalence increased linearly over time leading to a four-fold risk of mortality. (SageJournals) A. Becker-Merok. Lupus. Vol. 18, No. 6, 508-515. April 2009. (Also see: Vasculitis)
Active and Latent Tuberculosis (TB) in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Living in the United States. This study documents the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics and outcomes of patients with SLE and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) or active TB in an ethnically diverse clinic. A significant number of patients with SLE in a county clinic population in the United States had LTBI or TB. A. Chu, MD. Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. August 2009.
Systemic Autoimmune Diseases (SAD) in Patients with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection: Characterization of 1020 Cases (The HISPAMEC Registry). In the selected cohort, the SAD most commonly reported in association with chronic HCV infection were Sjögren’s syndrome (nearly half the cases), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. M. Ramos-Casals. J. Rheum. April 15, 2009. (Also see: Sjogren's and RA).
Fibromyalgia (FM), Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and Evaluation of SLE Activity. The prevalence of FM in SLE is minimally increased compared with its prevalence in patients with arthritis. F. Wolfe. J Rheumatol. November 1, 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia)
Pediatric Lupus
Acute epiglottitis as the initial presentation of pediatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). To the best of our knowledge, this article describes the first case of Haemophilus influenzae type f epiglottitis as the initial presentation of SLE in childhood. S. Charuvaniz. Pediatric Rheumatology. October 31 2009.
Influence of age at disease onset in the outcome of paediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (pSLE). The poorer outcome observed in younger children may be explained by a more severe disease expression, may be a higher infectious susceptibility, and a more aggressive therapy, particularly within the first 6 months of disease course. E. Descloux. Rheumatology Advance Access. May 4 2009.
Prevention of Lupus
Can Broccoli Prevent Lupus? Animal Studies Suggest It Can, but Human Trials Are Needed. A compound found in abundance in cruciferous vegetables, known as indole-3-carbinol (I3C), delayed the onset of lupus and reduced its severity in mice genetically bred to develop the disease. WebMD. 11/06/03.

Lupus Research
Vitamin D insufficiency in a large female SLE cohort. Sub-optimal vitamin D status is common in women with systemic lupus erythematosus and is related to season, cumulative glucocorticoid dose, and serum creatinine. (SageJournals) SMA Toloza. January 1 2010.
Vitamin D deficiency in systemic lupus erythmatosus (SLE): prevalence, predictors and clinical consequences. Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are common in patients with SLE and are associated with sun avoidance. G. Ruiz-Irastorza. Rheumatology Advance Access. April 14, 2008.
Medical researchers predict 'flood of discoveries' soon. What allows Harley and researchers worldwide to come closer to targeting lupus' underpinnings is the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation's Lupus Family Registry and Repository, a decade-long, $20 million collaboration with the National Institutes of Health. It contains genetic profiles and blood samples from thousands of lupus sufferers and their relatives. NewsOK.com. 09/14/07.
New Insights Into Autoimmunity And Depression. Some studies have described a possible link between Lupus's most severe psychiatric manifestation, psychosis, and a protein autoantibody associated with the central nervous system, anti-ribosomal P. ScienceDaily. 03/09/07. (Also see: Emotional Adjustment)
