Medical Therapy for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). This update provides evidence-based treatment recommendations for physicians involved in the care of patients with PAH. Due to the complexity of the diagnostic evaluation required and the treatment options available, referral of patients with PAH to a specialized center continues to be strongly recommended. Chest. 2007; 131:1917-1928. (Also see: Pulmonary Hypertension )
The Common-Sense Model (CSM) of self-regulation of health and illness: how can we use it to understand and respond to our patients’ needs? The key construct within the CSM is the idea of illness representations or ‘lay’ beliefs about illness. These representations integrate with existing schemata (the normative guidelines that people hold), enabling them to make sense of their symptoms and guide any coping actions. Editorial. Rheumatology 2007 46(6):904-906. (Also see: Emotional Adjustment )
The public neglect of rheumatic diseases: insights from analyses of attendees in a musculoskeletal disease (MSC) awareness activity. Many individuals having painful MSC seek medical help only when a very high threshold of pain is reached. Even while under treatment, the high mean pain scores suggest neglect of MSC that are not adequately recognised as important contributors to disability and decreased quality of life. Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases 2007;66:697-699. (Also see: Pain Management and Physician/Patient Relationships )
Latest Data Show MabThera(R) Provides Significant and Sustained Relief From Signs and Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. New data demonstrate that MabThera's (rituximab) effectiveness in relieving patients of the distressing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis is sustained or further improved with subsequent courses of treatment, as is the number of patients achieving remission. CNW Telbec. 06/14/07. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis )
Breakthrough Developments in Rheumatoid Arthritis Reported at Federation of Clinical Immunology Services Meeting in San Diego. About one percent of the US population will develop rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that leads to painful joint swelling. Scientists are cracking the genetic code that makes the immune system wage an attack on a person's joints. PRWebNewswire. 06/09/07. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis )
Induction of remission in active anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in patients who cannot be treated with cyclophosphamide. MMF (Cellcept), in combination with prednisolone, can induce remission in patients with relapses of AAV intolerant to cyclophosphamide. Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases 2007;66:798-802. (Also see: Vasculitis )
Largest-ever genetics study published. Among the discoveries are four chromosome regions containing genes that can increase risk of type one diabetes and three new genes for Crohn's disease. The researchers argue they have found for the first time a gene linking these two autoimmune diseases. Inthenews.co.uk. 06/06/07. (Also see: Diabetes and Crohn's Disease )
Genes Add Up Risk Of Autoimmune Disease. Geneticists have identified a link between the number of copies of a specific gene an individual has and their susceptibility to autoimmune diseases like lupus that affect the whole body. Research using DNA has revealed that people who have a below average number of copies of a gene, known as FCGR3B, have an increased risk of developing diseases caused when the body's immune system attacks its own tissue. Medical News Today. 05/25/07. (Also see: Causes of Scleroderma: Genetics, Lupus, and Autoimmune Diseases )
Ulcerative colitis (UC) sufferers find UC quite disruptive to many aspects of daily life. UC's overall psychological toll is greater than for asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and migraines. UC is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the intestine and can lead to symptoms such as severe abdominal pain and cramping, uncontrollable bloody diarrhea several times a day, fatigue and weight loss. EurekAlert! 05/17/07. (Also see: Ulcerative Colitis )
| Intermittent intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse therapy for the treatment of active interstitial lung disease associated with collagen vascular diseases. The efficacy and safety of our “divided administration” protocol of CYC for CVD-ILD was demonstrated. IngentaConnect. Modern Rheumatology, Volume 17, Number 2, April 2007, pp. 131-136(6).
