The Miami and Missouri Caucasian MCTD groups were largely similar; however, gastroesophageal reflux, sclerodactyly, and malar rash were significantly more frequent in the Missouri MCTD group and alopecia was more frequent in the Miami MCTD group. J Rheumatol 2008;35:429-37 (Also see: MCTD ) |
| B Cell Mutations That May Cause Cancers And Autoimmune Diseases. B cells, the white blood cells that produce antibodies, form a key part of our 'immune response'. We must maintain exactly the right number of B cells to remain healthy. Medical News Today. 03/03/08. (Also see: Causes of Scleroderma: B Cells and Autoimmunity ) |
| Oral Manifestations of Sjögren’s Syndrome. Saliva plays an essential role in numerous functions of the mouth. Xerostomia can be caused by medications, chronic diseases like Sjögren’s syndrome, and medical treatments, such as radiation therapy and bone marrow transplant. J Dent Res 87(4):308-318, 2008. | Vegan diet promotes atheroprotective antibodies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The effect was seen when a group of patients who kept to a gluten-free vegan diet for a year were compared with a control group which had followed ordinary dietary advice. Karolinska Institutet. Arthritis Research & Therapy, 18 March 2008. (Also see: RA ) |
| Treatment of Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) with Disease Modifying Drugs: Comparison of Drugs and Adverse Reactions. For both diseases methotrexate (MTX) was the most frequently used disease modifying drug (39% of patients with PsA, 30% with RA), with over 70% of patients in both diseases still taking the drug. Journal of Rheumatology. Vol 35: No. 3 March 2008. (Also see: Psoriatic Arthritis and RA ) |

(ScienceDirect) Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology Vol 22, Issue 1, March 2008, Pp 165-189. (Also see: EDS and MFS ) |
| Adult Stem Cells May Improve Treatment Of Certain Cardiovascular Disorders And Autoimmune Diseases. When this team examined studies related to autoimmune diseases, 26 reports representing 854 patients reported nonmyeloablative transplants with a treatment-related mortality rate of less than one percent; dose-reduced myeloablative transplants with a treatment-related mortality rate of less than two percent; and intense myeloablative regiments with a mortality rate of 18 percent. Medical News Today. 03/08/08. (Also see: Stem Cell Transplants ) |
| Immunogenetic mechanisms for the coexistence of organ-specific and systemic autoimmune diseases. Both types of autoimmune diseases may coexist in the same patient, either sequentially or concurrently, sustained by the presence of autoantibodies directed against the corresponding autoantigens. Journal of Autoimmune Diseases 2008, 5:1. (Also see: Scleroderma in Overlap ) |
| Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), cardiovascular disease and physical exercise: a systematic review. There is strong evidence suggesting that exercise from low to high intensity of various modes is effective in improving disease-related characteristics and functional ability in RA patients. Rheumatology 2008 47(3):239-248. (Also see: RA ) |
