Autoimmune Medical News by Date

July 2008
Raynaud's Phenomenon Is Not An Independent Risk Factor For Arterial Thrombotic Events (ATE) In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The presence and duration of Raynaud's phenomenon did not increase the risk of ATE in our cohort of SLE patients after adjusting for common thrombotic risk factors. S. Appenzeller. THU0227. EULAR 2008. (Also see: Lupus)
Migraine Is An Independent Risk Factor For Arterial Thrombotic Events (ATE) In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The presence and the frequency of migraine attacks, but not the duration of migraine was associated with ATE in SLE patients. S. Appenzeller. THU0228. EULAR 2008. (Also see: Vascular Headache and Lupus)
Progressive divergent shifts in natural and induced T-regulatory cells signify the transition from undifferentiated (UCTD) to definitive connective tissue disease (CTD). The shift toward T(h)1 with increased IFNgamma production in patients with UCTD combined with the degree of immunoregulatory disturbances characterized by the progressive divergent shifts in natural and induced T-regulatory cell populations signify the transition from undifferentiated to definitive CTD. (PubMed) Szodoray P. Int Immunol 2008 Jun 11. (Also see: UCTD)
Cost-Effectiveness of Abatacept in Patients with Moderately to Severely Active Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Inadequate Response to Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Antagonists (anti-TNF). Abatacept is cost-effective by current standards of medical practice in patients with moderately to severely active RA and inadequate response to an anti-TNF. Montserrat Vera-Llonch. J Rheumatol July 15 2008. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis and TNF Inhibitors)
Arthritis gene therapy's first death. The case currently under discussion has given the field a scare, but it seems that the authorities are not holding gene transfer responsible for the subject's tragic death. The logic behind a local, intra-articular gene therapy approach to treating arthritis remains as compelling as it did when first published over 15 years ago, and we continue to believe it will eventually form part of the clinical armamentarium. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2008, 10:110. (Also see: Arthritis)
Diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC) is delayed in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS): An experimental study. Deficient endogenous pain inhibition, e.g. DNIC, or hormonal abnormalities like hypocortisolism, could be responsible for chronic widespread pain in CFS. (PubMed) Meeus M. Pain. 2008 Jul 8. (Also see: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
Neuropsychological Performance in Persons With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS): Results From a Population-Based Study. Results confirm and quantify alterations in motor speed and working memory in CFS subjects independent of comorbid psychiatric disease and medication usage. Matthias Majer. Psychosomatic Medicine. July 7, 2008. (Also see: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).
Altered intestinal permeability (IP) in patients with primary fibromyalgia (FM) and in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is often associated with an increased intestinal permeability (IP) in patients with FM. A. Goebel. Rheumatology Advance Access. June 7, 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia and Bowel Dysfunction)
Exercise tolerance in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) after autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). The study group showed significantly reduced exercise tolerance compared to healthy subjects. Functional ability and joint status were also decreased in patients after ASCT. Children with JIA post ASCT have impaired exercise tolerance even 9 years post ASCT. T Takken. Bone Marrow Transplantation. June 30, 2008. (Also see:  Arthritis and Stem Cell Transplants)
Coexistence of five autoimmune diseases: diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. The literature reports overlap syndromes in various combinations; however, the coexistence of five autoimmune diseases is extremely rare. (PubMed) Wielosz E. Rheumatol Int. 2008 July. (Also see : Scleroderma in Overlap)
Surgical Treatment of Endometriosis: A 7-Year Follow-up on the Requirement for Further Surgery. Local excision of endometriosis is associated with good short-term outcomes but, on long-term follow-up, has a high reoperation rate. (PubMed) Shakiba K. Obstet Gynecol. 2008 Jun;111(6):1285-92. (Also see: Endometriosis).
