| Antibody Protein Array Analysis of the Tear Film Cytokines. Preliminary results using tears collected from patients with Sjogren's syndrome reveal methodological advantages of protein array technology and support the concept that autoimmune-mediated dry eye disease has an inflammatory component. Li, Shimin PhD. Optometry & Vision Science. August 2008. (Also see: Autoimmune Eye Diseases and Sjögren's) | |
| Bone marrow stem cells may help control inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Massachusetts General Hospital investigators have found that infusions of a particular bone marrow stem cell appeared to protect gastrointestinal tissue from autoimmune attack in a mouse model. Findings suggest that mesenchymal stem cells therapy could become a useful treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. EurekAlert. August 20, 2008. | Interstitial cystitis (IC) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a 20-year-old woman. Chronic IC is an uncommon manifestation of SLE. (PubMed). Do Socorro Teixeira Moreira Almeida M. Rheumatol Int. 2008 Aug 12. (Also see: Interstitial Cystitis and Lupus) | |
| Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQL) In Primary Raynaud Phenomenon (RP). This study shows a reduction of the HRQL in patients with primary RP, compared with control subjects. The psychologic wellbeing represents the most involved area, whereas physical functioning and symptoms are significantly influenced by age and comorbidities. Moreover, these patients are more anxious/depressed. De Angelis, Rossella. Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. August 2008. (Also see: Raynaud's) | |
| Speed of Mental Operations in Fibromyalgia (FMS): A Selective Naming Speed Deficit. Abnormal processing of information in FMS may hold clues to brain abnormalities in this illness. Abnormalities in naming speed are an unappreciated feature of FMS. Selective deficits in naming speed in association with otherwise well preserved global processing speed set patients with FMS apart from controls with memory complaints. Leavitt, Frank PhD. Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. August 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia) | |
| Refractory Vertebral Sarcoidosis Responding to Infliximab. We report a case of sarcoidosis, involving the lung and vertebrae, which was refractory to conventional therapy. Our patient's clinical symptoms and radiologic lesions of vertebral sarcoid dramatically improved after treatment with infliximab. Garg, Sanjay MD. Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. August 2008. (Also see: Sarcoidosis and Infliximab) | |
| Autoimmune diabetes in adults: lessons from the UK prospective diabetes study (UKPDS). The combined evidence suggests that latent autoimmune diabetes in adults is an adult-onset form of Type 1 diabetes, rather than a separate condition or an intermediate state in a continuum of phenotype from Type 1 to Type 2 diabetes. (IngentaConnect) Desai, M. Diabet. Med. August 2008. (Also see: Diabetes) | |
| The influence of gluten free diet on quantitative ultrasound of proximal phalanxes in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and celiac disease. The gluten free diet, as well as the optimization of glycemic control, plays an important role in preventing the osteopenic status caused by the clustering of these two chronic diseases. (PubMed) Valerio, G. Bone. August 2008. (Also see: Diabetes and Celiac Disease) | |
| Innate immunity and its role in type 1 diabetes. The discovery that innate signaling pathways are involved in the mechanism that may trigger islet inflammation and destruction holds great promise for the identification of new innate signaling molecules that could be targeted to specifically inhibit the autoimmune process to prevent autoimmune diabetes. (PubMed) Zipris, D. Curr Opin Endocrinol Diabetes Obes. August 2008. (Also see: Diabetes) | |
| Immune modulation and increased neurotrophic factor production in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients treated with testosterone. Evidence from basic and clinical studies suggests that testosterone has an immunomodulatory as well as a potential neuroprotective effect that could be beneficial in MS. Stefan M Gold. Journal of Neuroinflammation. July 31, 2008. (Also see: Multiple Sclerosis ) | |
| Fertility preservation treatment for young women with autoimmune diseases facing treatment with gonadotoxic agents. Oocyte or embryo cryopreservation should be considered for fertility preservation in young women with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases who face imminent gonadotoxic treatment. S. E. Elizur. Rheumatology Advance Access. July 26, 2008. (Also see: Autoimmunity and Pregnancy ) | |
| Study shows pre-eclampsia may be an autoimmune disease. Researchers from University of Texas-Houston Medical School have revealed that pregnancy-induced high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia might be an autoimmune disease. The London News.Net. July 28, 2008. (Also see: Autoimmunity and Pregnancy ) |
