| Thyroid Cancer in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): A Case-Control Study. These data suggest that the prevalence of papillary thyroid cancer in SLE patients is higher than in age-matched controls, particularly in patients with thyroid autoimmunity. A. Antonelli. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. November 11 2009. (Also see: Lupus and Overlapping Diseases) | |
| Liver enzyme abnormalities in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): a focus on toxic hepatitis. Herbal medicines and anti-tuberculosis medications, known to cause toxic hepatitis, can also induce increased liver enzyme levels in SLE patients. However, since most herbal medicines contain a mixture of various products, we could not ascertain what specific ingredient induced the increase in liver enzyme levels. (SpringerLink) H. Minyoung. Rheumatology International. November 3 2009. (Also see: Complications of Lupus) | |
| Acute epiglottitis as the initial presentation of pediatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). To the best of our knowledge, this article describes the first case of Haemophilus influenzae type f epiglottitis as the initial presentation of SLE in childhood. S. Charuvaniz. Pediatric Rheumatology. October 31 2009. (Also see: Pediatric Lupus) | |
| Serum melatonin levels in ankylosing spondilitis (AS): correlation with disease activity. Our results suggest a possible role for this immunoregulatory hormone in the disease activity in AS patients. (SpringerLink) K. Senel. Rheumatology International. October 23 2009. | Hand Syndromes Associated with Diabetes: Impairments and Obesity Predict Disability. In adults with hand syndromes associated with diabetes, disability was related to impaired muscle function and carpal tunnel syndrome, further influenced by obesity. C. Redmond. JRheum. November 2 2009. (Also see: Diabetes) | |
| Dermatomyositis and HIV infection: case report and review of the literature. Given the broad effects of this virus on both the humoral and cell-mediated arms of the immune system, illnesses such as polymyositis and Reiter's syndrome appear to be more prevalent in HIV-infected individuals and occur in the absence of well-described predispositions. (PubMed) MB Carroll. Rheumatol Int. October 24 2009. (Also see: Dermatomyositis/Polymyositis) | |
| Why are women predisposed to autoimmune rheumatic diseases? In searching for an explanation for this female excess, most attention has focused on hormonal changes - both exogenous changes (for example, oral contraceptive pill) and fluctuations in endogenous hormone levels particularly related to menstruation and pregnancy history. J.E. Oliver. Arthritis Research & Therapy. October 26 2009, 11:252. (Also see: Causes of Autoimmunity) | |
| The effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on autoimmune disease: rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Prospective trials suggests that there may be a small increased risk of mild/moderate flares in women with SLE taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but the risk of major flare does not appear to be increased. In RA, HRT does not appear to be associated with an increased risk of disease flare and may actually improve disease activity. In all individuals with autoimmune disease, the risk of venous thrombosis associated with oral HRT is an important factor that should also be considered. (InformaWorld) C.R. Holroyd. Climacteric. October 2009. (Also see: Autoimmunity) | |
| Bone involvement in clusters of autoimmune diseases: Just a complication? Bone impairment in multiple autoimmune diseases might be considered not only a complication due to endocrine or nutritional mechanisms, but also a consequence of an immunoregulatory imbalance. F. Lombardi. Bone. October 23 2009. (Also see: Skeletal Involvement) |
