The danger model in deciphering autoimmunity. Autoimmunity has been a topic of intensive research for several decades, yet amazingly, no uniform hypothesis exists to explain the basis for the spectrum of autoantibody specificities seen in autoimmune diseases. The emerging picture is one in which disruption of tissue homeostasis takes centre stage, with the antigen-presenting cells as the key players. A. Tveita. Rheumatology Advance Access. February 9 2010. (Also see: Causes of Autoimmunity)
Reduced erythrocyte deformability in active and untreated Behçet's disease patients. We suggest that the decrease in erythrocyte deformability in Behcet's disease may be related to oxidative damage of erythrocytes and subsequently takes part in the development of thrombosis in Behcet's disease. (IngentaConnect) S. Tatlican. International Journal of Dermatology. Volume 49, Number 2, February 2010 , pp. 167-171(5). (Also see: Symptoms of Behcet's)
B-cell depletion therapy in patients with refractory Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG) with head and neck manifestations. In this study, the effects of rituximab therapy in patients with head and neck manifestations of WG were examined. All patients who did not respond to the first course achieved remission after a second course of rituximab. (Future Medicine) J. Hernandez-Rodriguez. International Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. February 2010, Vol. 5, No. 1, Pages 29-32. (Also see: Wegener's Granulomatosis)
Sjögren's syndrome (SS) -onset lupus (SLE) patients have distinctive clinical manifestations and benign prognosis: A case control study. Different from SLE-only patients, SS/SLE patients have distinctive clinical manifestations and benign prognosis that require less vigorous treatment with glucocorticoids and/or immunosuppressants. D. Xu. Lupus. February 1 2010. (Also see: Lupus and Overlapping Diseases and Sjogren's)
Mortality and Predictors of Mortality in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) - A Role for Mannose-binding Lectin (MBL)? In our cohort, states of high MBL production and several previously reported factors contributed significantly to this increased risk of overall death and cardiovascular death in patients with RA. L. Troelsen. Journal of Rheumatology. January 28 2010. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) related polymyositis. Chronic GVHD sometimes mimics autoimmune diseases. We report the case of a 39-year-old patient who presented atypical polymyositis without elevated creatinine phosphokinase, related to a chronic GVHD following interruption of immunosuppressive treatment. (SpringerLink) H. Maillard – Lefebvre. January 13 2010. (Also see: Research on Polymyositis and GVHD).
Efficacy of acupuncture in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) —a systematic review with a meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials. There was no evidence for the reduction of fatigue and sleep disturbances, or the improvement of physical function at post-treatment. There was no evidence for the reduction of pain and improvement of physical function at the latest follow-up. Acupuncture cannot be recommended for the management of FMS. J. Langhorst. Rheumatology Advance Access. January 25 2010. (Also see: Treatments of FMS)
Association of autoimmune type atrophic corpus gastritis with Helicobacter pylori infection. Signs of H. pylori infection in autoimmune gastritis, and positive autoimmune serum markers in H. pylori gastritis suggest an etiological role for H. pylori in autoimmune gastritis. L.I. Verijola. World Journal of Gastroenterology. January 7 2010. (Also see: Symptoms of Autoimmunity)
Hormone therapy in rheumatic diseases. The optimization of the therapeutical use of steroid hormones such as glucocorticoids, estrogens or D hormone is now possible following recent basic and clinical research achievements. C. Maurizio. Current Opinion in Rheumatology. 13 January 2010. (Also see: Medications)
Clinical and Prognostic Significance of Parotid Scintigraphy in 405 Patients with Primary Sjögren's Syndrome (SS). Patients with SS presenting with severe scintigraphic involvement at diagnosis had a more pronounced autoimmune expression, a higher risk of developing systemic features and lymphoma, and a lower survival rate. M. Ramos-Casals. JRheum. January 15 2010. (Also see: Symptoms of Sjogren's)
| Pulmonary Manifestations in Sjögren's Syndrome (SS): Correlation Analysis Between Chest Computed Tomographic (CT) Findings and Clinical Subsets with Poor Prognosis in 80 Patients. Cysts are significantly associated with anti-SSB/La seropositivity and clonally derived lymphoproliferative disorder (cLPD). The presence of lung cysts revealed by chest CT might be a prognostic clinical feature, a clue, or a predictor of cLPD in patients with SS. Maiko Watanabe J. Rheum. Dec. 15, 2009. | Natural killer (NK) cells in atopic and autoimmune diseases of the skin. NK cells are best known for their ability to recognize and kill tumor cells and virally infected cells and for their ability to produce large amounts of some cytokines, such as IFN-γ. We believe that there is solid evidence that NK cells actively participate in a number of diseases that have not been traditionally linked to this type of lymphocyte, including atopic and autoimmune diseases of the skin. D.V. Bubnoff, MD. The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Volume 125, Issue 1, Pages 60-68 (January 2010). (Also see: Causes of Autoimmunity and Natural Killer Cells) |
An outbreak of neurological autoimmunity with polyradiculoneuropathy in workers exposed to aerosolised porcine neural tissue: a descriptive study. Between November, 2006, and May, 2008, a subacute neurological syndrome affected workers from two swine abattoirs in Minnesota and Indiana who had occupational exposure to aerosolised porcine brain. The neurological disorder described is autoimmune in origin and is related to occupational exposure to multiple aerosolised porcine brain tissue antigens. D. Lachance, MD. The Lancet Neurology. Volume 9, Issue 1, Pages 55 - 66, January 2010. (Also see: Causes of Autoimmunity)
