August 2013 Autoimmune News

Atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): the heart to gut connection! 60% of AF patients with GERD and/or IBS triggered AF and a positive vagal response during radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA), compared to only 13% of matched controls. PubMed, J Interv Card Electrophysiol, 2013 Jun 6. (Also see:GERD, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Scleroderma Heart Involvement)

The clinical and laboratory characteristics of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) that progresses to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The SS/SLE patients had an earlier age of onset, higher incidences of arthritis, leucopenia, proteinuria and low complement levels, and lower incidences of xerostomia and interstitial lung disease compared with Primary Sjogren's Syndrome patients. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 2013 Apr;16(2):173-7. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome and Lupus in Overlap)

Signal Hyperintensities (SH) on Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients with Primary Sjogren Syndrome (pSS) and Frequent Episodic Tension-type Headache (FETH). Periventricular SH seem to be associated with increased platelet serotonin release in pSS patients with FETH and correlated with disease duration and might be linked with chronic immunoinflammation of low-grade intensity and vasculitis in pSS. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2013 Jun 1. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome)

Determination of dermatology life quality index, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in patients with chronic urticaria (CU). These findings support the relationship between the inflammatory process in chronic urticaria and the clinical findings. Ter Media, March 2013. (Also see Urticaria)

Sclerotic bodies beyond nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Sclerotic bodies may be found in skin biopsies from patients with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, 29 Jun 2013. (Also see Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis)

Anti-NKG2A autoantibodies in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). NKG2A autoantibodies are rare, but when they occur they may contribute to the pathogenesis by increasing the killing of cells and the release of autoantigens. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 2013 Jul 3. (Also see Lupus Antibodies)

IL-17A: A Unique Pathway in Immune-Mediated Diseases: Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). IL-17A is either important in a subset of patients or plays a relatively minor role in inflammatory joint disease. PubMed, Immunology. 2013 Jul 2. (Also see Psoriasis and Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis)
