December 2013 Autoimmune News

Value of the left inferior thyroid artery peak systolic velocity (PSV) in diagnosing autoimmune thyroid disease. The left inferior thyroid artery PSV was the most accurate sonographic parameter for the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease. PubMed, 2013 Nov;32(11):1969-78. J Ultrasound Med. (Also see Thyroid Diseases)

Patients with the most advanced rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain with Th1 systemic defects after TNF inhibitors treatment despite clinical improvement. Although therapy induced clinical improvement in almost all patients, those with advanced RA remained with signs of inflammation. PubMed, 2013 No Rheumatol Int. v13. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Therapeutic drug monitoring in rheumatic diseases: utile or futile? The therapeutic effect of most medications may be slow to manifest and studies in rheumatic diseases have so far failed to confirm a useful association between concentrations and disease control or drug toxicity. PubMed, Rheumatology, 2013 Nov 5. (Also see Rheumatic Diseases)

Emerging cell and cytokine targets in rheumatoid arthritis. These exciting new approaches will considerably enhance our repertoire in the battle against this potentially devastating disease. PubMed, Nat Rev Rheumatol, 2013 Nov 12. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments)

EULAR recommendations for the management of rheumatoid arthritis with synthetic and biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs(sDMARDs and bDMARDs): 2013 update. EULAR's most recent consensus on the management of RA with sDMARDs, glucocorticoids and bDMARDs. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 2013 Oct 25. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments and DMARDs)

Cystectomy for ulcerative interstitial cystitis (IC): sequelae and patients' perceptions of improvement. Despite subsequent reoperations, symptom improvements lead to high levels of satisfaction with cystectomy for IC. PubMed, Urology, 2013 Oct;82(4):829-33. (Also see Interstitial Cystitis)

Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBTs) for fibromyalgia. CBTs provided a small incremental benefit over control interventions in reducing pain, negative mood and disability at the end of treatment and at long-term follow-up. PubMed, Cochrane Database Syst Rev, 2013 Sep 10;9:CD009796. (Also see Fibromyalgia Treatments)

Diagnosis and treatment of primary Sjögren syndrome (PSS)-associated peripheral neuropathy: a six-case series. In PSS patients, a precise diagnosis is important, because the therapeutic strategy and response varies depending on the type of neuropathy. Springer, Modern Rheumatology, Sept 2013. (Also see Sjögren's Symptoms)

Effect of gender on clinical presentation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The incidence of SLE is markedly increased in females of child-bearing age and males experience less of the typical mucocutaneous and musculoskeletal symptoms commonly present at diagnosis in women. Rheumatology, 52 (12): 2108-2115, May 2, 2013. (Also see Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Diagnosis)

Supervised physical exercise improves endothelial function in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Physical exercise is a useful strategy to improve endothelial function and aerobic capacity without worsening disease activity in SLE patients. Rheumatology, 2013, 52 (12): 2187-2195. (Also see Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Treatments)
