May 2014 Autoimmune News

Abatacept treatment reduces disease activity in early primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) open-label proof of concept ASAP study). Abatacept is effective, safe and well tolerated. It results in improved disease activity, laboratory parameters, fatigue and health-related quality of life in patients with early and active pSS. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 2014 Jan 28. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome)

Gene profiling reveals specific molecular pathways in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome with lupus (APS-SLE). Specific gene signatures explain the pro-atherosclerotic and pro-thrombotic alterations in these highly related autoimmune diseases. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 2014 Mar 11. (Also see Antiphospholid Syndrome and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Research)

Structural deterioration of finger joints with ultrasonographic synovitis in rheumatoid arthritis patients with clinical low disease activity (CLDA). Even in patients with a long period of CLDA, finger joints with positive synovial vascularity showed structural alteration, especially in the progression of joint space narrowing. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 2014 Apr 4. (Also see Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Vigilance for Kidney Problems Key for Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients. RA patients should have periodic testing for kidney problems, and should keep blood pressure under control, avoid a high-salt diet, and cut back medications that are damaging to the kidneys. Mayo Clinic, 04/11/2014. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis Renal Involvement)

Sympathetic nervous system dysfunction in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis. Sympathetic dysfunction could be the common underlying pathogenesis that brings on these overlapping clinical features. PubMed, J Clin Rheumatol, 2014 Apr;20(3):146-50. (Also see Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Interstitial Cystitis)

Early events in Sjögren's Syndrome pathogenesis: The importance of innate immunity in disease initiation. This review explores the relationship between innate immunity and SS pathogenesis prior to overt disease onset and discusses therapeutic strategies to mitigate disease progression. PubMed, Cytokine, 2014 Mar 19. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome)

The relationship between asthma and self-reported anxiety in a predominantly healthy adult population. In patients with mild asthma, there was a 43.5% increased risk of anxiety. All patients with asthma should be screened for anxiety. PubMed, Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol, 2014 Apr;112(4):329-32. (Also see Asthma)

Cell adhesion molecules as potential biomarkers of nephritis, damage and accelerated atherosclerosis in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). E-selectin may act as a marker of cardiovascular risk in SLE, whilst vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 may have a role as a non-invasive biomarker for lupus nephritis activity. PubMed, Lupus, 2014 Mar 19. (Also see Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Kidney Involvement)

Finger and Toe Necrosis: Is It Raynaud's? A 37-year-old woman was evaluated for extensive and progressive finger and toe necrosis. Her mother has rheumatoid arthritis and she has never smoked or abused alcohol. Medscape, April 15, 2014. (Also see Raynaud's Diagnosis)
