June 2014 Autoimmune News

Cigarette smoking, antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) and vascular events (VE) in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Among ever regular smokers who were aPL positive, there was a strikingly high frequency of former VE and the underlying mechanisms and temporality between smoking, aPL and VE need further investigations. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 2014 Apr 1. (Also see Antiphospholid Syndrome and Antibodies in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)

Rituximab therapy in patients with refractory dermatomyositis (DM) or polymyositis (PM): differential effects in a real-life population. Objective improvement was seen in the majority of patients with regard to creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and lung function tests, and glucocorticoids could be reduced. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 2014 Apr 4. (Also see Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis Treatments)

Genome-wide association studies in Sjögren's syndrome (SS): What do the genes tell us about disease pathogenesis? Genetic findings are discussed with particular attention paid to the genes identified, the strength of associations, and how the SS-associated genes compare to what has been discovered previously in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). PubMed, Autoimmun Rev, 2014 Jul;13(7):756-761. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome and Causes of Lupus: Genetics)

Sleep disorders in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Does vitamin D play a role? A role for vitamin D in sleep quality of SLE patients was found and further studies are warranted to confirm these results and to find possible mechanisms of action. PubMed, Lupus, 2014 Apr 14. (Also see Treatments for Lupus: Vitamin D)

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): prediction by MRI of the subsequent development of brain lesions. The presence of lacunar and/or localized cortical infarcts on initial MRI scans may predict the development of new brain lesions in patients with SLE. PubMed, Acad Radiol, 2014 May;21(5):617-23. (Also see Symptoms of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to treat fibromyalgia. LLLT provided relief from fibromyalgia symptoms in patients and should be further investigated as a therapeutic tool for management in fibromyalgia. PubMed, Lasers Med Sci, 2014 May 7. (Also see Fibromyalgia Treatments)

Suicidality in Chronic Pain: Predictors of Suicidal Ideation in Fibromyalgia (FMS). The presence of suicidal ideation in FMS patients is closely related to comorbid depression, anxiety and to a higher impact of the disease in daily life. PubMed, Pain Pract, 2014 Apr 1. (Also see Fibromyalgia and Suicide Prevention)

Good response to infliximab in rheumatoid arthritis following failure of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra). Switching from IL-1Ra to infliximab is effective in improving disease activity and maintaining joint function. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 2014 May 5. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments)

Low vitamin D level is not associated with increased incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Vitamin D levels were not associated with the development of RA in this patient population with matched controls. PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 2014 Apr 19. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases and Vitamin D)

Rheumatoid factor (RF) in idiotypic regulation of autoimmunity. RF detected by agglutination of tanned IgG-loaded erythrocytes is involved in negative idiotypic regulation of lymphocytes specific to autoimmunity-inducing antigens. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 2014 Mar 26. (Also see Autoimmunity and Autoantibodies)
