Is statin-induced myositis part of the polymyositis disease spectrum? Statin medications have recently been shown to cause not only a toxic myopathy but also an immune-mediated necrotizing myositis. PubMed, Curr Rheumatol Rep, 2014 Aug;16(8):433. (Also see Polymyositis and Statins)
Advances in the understanding and treatment of systemic complications in Sjögren's syndrome. Dryness of the mucosal surfaces is the pivotal, but not only, clinical involvement that characterizes primary Sjögren's syndrome. PubMed, Curr Opin Rheumatol, 2014 Sep;26(5):520-7. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome Treatments)
Rituximab (RTX) in primary Sjögren's (pSS) syndrome: a ten-year journey. The good results observed after RTX treatment in pSS should represent the starting point to develop evidence-based guidelines for the use of biologic therapy in this disease. PubMed, Lupus, 2014 Aug 5. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome Treatments)
Prolonged Clinical Remission in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Prolonged remission is an infrequent outcome among patients and is preceded by an atypically monophasic clinical course in a significant minority and may reflect unique pathophysiologic mechanisms. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2014 Aug 1. (Also see Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Treatments)
Relationships of diabetes-specific emotional distress, depression, anxiety, and overall well-being with HbA1c in adult persons with type 1 diabetes. To stimulate adequate care strategies, health personnel should acknowledge depression and diabetes-specific emotional distress as different conditions in clinical consultations. Journal of Psychosomatic Research, July 12 2014. (Also see Diabetes)
Cognitive and physical fatigue tasks enhance pain, cognitive fatigue and physical fatigue in people with fibromyalgia. People with fibromyalgia show larger increases in pain, perceived cognitive fatigue and perceived physical fatigue to both cognitive and physical fatigue tasks compared to healthy controls. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res, 2014 Jul 29. (Also see Fibromyalgia)
Increased serum levels of soluble vascular endothelial-cadherin in patients with systemic vasculitis (SV). Increased serum levels of soluble VE-cadherin might be a novel biomarker for evaluating the severity of Henoch-Schönlein purpura and useful for identifying the presence of SV in inflammatory skin conditions. PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 2014 Aug;34(8):1139-43. (Also see Vasculitis)
Sarcoidosis-associated pulmonary hypertension (SAPH) and lung transplantation for sarcoidosis. Lung transplantation is a viable therapeutic option for sarcoid patients with severe pulmonary fibrocystic sarcoidosis or SAPH refractory to medical therapy. PubMed, Semin Respir Crit Care Med, 2014 Jun;35(3):362-71. (Also see Sarcoidosis)
Genetics of sarcoidosis. Biology approaches will soon help unravel the differing and common features of sarcoidosis with other granulomatous disorders and also with diseases with significantly different phenotypes and allow the development of new therapeutic strategies and tools. PubMed, Semin Respir Crit Care Med, 2014 Jun;35(3):296-306. (Also see Sarcoidosis)
Joint damage progression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in clinical remission. Do biologics perform better than synthetic antirheumatic drugs? This observational study confirms that the rate of structural damage progression in clinical remission is decreased taking biologics compared to synthetic DMARD. However, while the difference is statistically significant it is probably not relevant from a clinical perspective. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2014 Aug;41(8):1576-82.
