Establishment of a novel diagnostic model for Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) by proteomic fingerprinting. Proteomic fingerprinting was able to distinguish pSS from non-pSS controls with a sensitivity of 77.1 % and a specificity of 85.5 %, and was effective in the diagnosis of pSS. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2014 Sep 2. (Also see Diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome)
The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) profiles of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) differ distinctly from the profiles of clinically related connective tissue diseases. Novel HLA alleles associated with MCTD and disease subsets were identified and DRB1*04:01 was confirmed as a major risk allele. Altogether, the data reinforce the notion of MCTD as a disease entity distinct from lupus, scleroderma and polymyositis. PubMed, Rheumatology, 2014 Sep 3. (Also see Mixed Connective Tissue Disease)
Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) in Undifferentiated Forms of Connective Tissue Disease(CTD). There is much uncertainty and controversy surrounding the suggestive forms of CTD-associated ILD (CTD-ILD) and prospective studies are needed to provide a better understanding of the natural history of these cohorts. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res, 2014 Jul 21. (Also see Connective Tissue Disease and Lung Involvement Prognosis)
Hippocampal atrophy is associated with cerebrospinal fluid anti-NR2 antibodies in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Anti-NR2 antibodies cause neuronal death observed as reduced hippocampal grey matter in patients with SLE and pSS as previously demonstrated in mice with autoimmune disease. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 2014 Aug 22. (Also see SLE Symptoms and Sjogren's Syndrome)
Infliximab has no apparent effect in the inner ear hearing function of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Our study showed that there was no notable change or deterioration in the hearing function of the patients with AS and RA who were treated with infliximab. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2014 Oct;33(10):1481-7. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments and Ankylosing Spondylitis)
Comparison of cancer incidence among patients with rheumatic disease (RD): a retrospective cohort study. Different RDs are associated with particular cancers and thus, cancer surveillance tailored to specific RD might be beneficial. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther, 2014 Aug 28;16(5):428. (Also see Cancer)
The Impact of Pain on Anxiety and Depression is Mediated by Objective and Subjective Sleep Characteristics in Fibromyalgia (FM) Patients. There is a high prevalence of sleep problems in individuals with FM, which may play a role in the relationship between pain and anxiety and depression. PubMed, Clin J Pain, 2014 Oct;30(10):852-9. (Also see Fibromyalgia and Depression)
Memory B cell subsets and plasmablasts are lower in early than in long-standing Rheumatoid Arthritis. The onset of RA is characterized by higher percentages and absolute numbers of na´ve B cells and could represent a promising biomarker of outcome. PubMed, BMC Immunol, 2014 Sep 4;15(1):28. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis and B Cells and T Cells and Autoimmunity)
Fatigue effects in daily life activities of kidney transplant recipients. Fatigue is directly related to the level of activities of daily living, causing less ability to perform activities in the higher level of fatigue, which is in the immediate postoperative period and only settling fully on the 9th postoperative day. PubMed, Transplant Proc, 2014 Jul-Aug;46(6):1745-9. (Also see Fatigue and Kidney Transplant)
Managing treatment fatigue in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) on long-term therapy: the role of multiple sclerosis nurses. Patients with MS on long-term therapy may suffer from treatment fatigue and poor adherence. MS nurses are ideally situated to help patients cope with any factors that may limit adherence. PubMed, Patient Prefer Adherence, 2014 Aug 19;8:1093-9. (Also see Fatigue and Multiple Sclerosis)
