Evaluation of Germinal Center (GC)-like Structures and B Cell Clonality in Patients with Primary Sjögren Syndrome with and without Lymphoma. GC-like structures seen in minor salivary glands may represent various subtypes of CD21+ infiltrates. A clear association between cellular infiltrates, B cell clonality, and lymphoma development was unable to be detected. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2014 Oct 1. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome)
The role of salivary gland elastosonography in Sjogren's syndrome (SS): preliminary results. With the progression of Sjogren's, the elasticity scores of the parotid glands increase gradually, indicating that ultrasonic elastosonography has the potential to demonstrate the progression of the disease. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 2014 Sep 15. (Also see Sjogren's Syndrome)
Antiphosphatidylserine antibodies(aPS) as diagnostic indicators of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Findings reveal a significant association between aPS and APS, especially when used to diagnosis clinical cases with other negative aPL tests and there is an independent association between aPS and primary APS. PubMed, Lupus, 2014 Sep 24. (Also see Antiphospholipid Syndrome)
Cardiopulmonary correlates of cognition in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Patients with mild SLE disease activity have cognitive dysfunction associated with certain objective markers of exercise capacity and activity levels and additional studies are needed to better understand the relationship between cognition and physical activity in patients with SLE. PubMed, Lupus, 2014 Sep 23. (Also see Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Brain Involvement)
Pathological spectrums and renal prognosis of severe lupus patients with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. Creatinine concentrations in the serum (SCr) and the proportion of crescents were the most important risk factors for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 2014 Oct 4. (Also see Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Kidney Involvement)
Coronary(CAC) and Abdominal Aorta Calcification (AAC) in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Relationships with Traditional Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Disease Characteristics, and Concomitant Treatments. In patients with RA, CAC and AAC are more prevalent and more severe compared with age-matched and sex-matched control participants. Current use of methotrexate is a major determinant of the absence of CAC, and erosive arthritis is a major determinant of AAC. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2014 Oct 1. (Also see Cardiac Involvement)
Assessment of visual and auditory evoked potentials (VEP) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with and without fatigue. Significant, usually asymmetrical VEP and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) abnormalities were found in fatigued MS patients, with no relationships to disease-related variables. EP may be considered an electrophysiological marker of fatigue in MS patients. PubMed, Neurol Sci, 2014 Sep 21. (Also see MS Research)
Vitamin D status in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients: relation to clinical manifestations, disease activity, quality of life (QoL) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Special attention is required regarding vitamin D levels in RA patients with FMS and decreased QoL. Vitamin D should be corrected and supplementation considered among the RA management armamentarium. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 2014 Oct 7. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments, Fibromyalgia and Vitamin D Deficiency)
Identification of Previously Undiagnosed Diabetes and Prediabetes in the Inpatient Setting Using Risk Factor and Hemoglobin A1C Screening. The presence of certain risk factors such as age and hypertension may be an indication for diabetes screening. PubMed, Ann Pharmacother, 2014 Nov;48(11):1434-9. (Also see Diagnosis of Diabetes)
Association of history of surgery for endometriosis with severity of deeply infiltrating endometriosis. A history of surgery for endometriosis correlates with the presence and severity of deeply infiltrating endometriosis, so a thorough preoperative assessment is necessary before undertaking subsequent surgeries. PubMed, Obstet Gynecol, 2014 Oct;124(4):709-17. (Also see Endometriosis)
