January 2015 Autoimmune News

Echocardiographic Abnormalities in New-onset Polymyositis (PM)/Dermatomyositis (DM). Tissue doppler imaging is a useful method to detect early cardiac abnormalities at the time of diagnosis of PM and DM complementing the conventional echocardiographic measurements. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 11/29/2014. (Also see Diagnosis of Dermatomyosis and Polymyositis)

Illness perceptions and psychological distress associated with physical health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) compared to systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. These findings indicate that psychological factors are important correlates of HRQoL in these disease groups. PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 2014 Dec;34(12):1671-81. (Also see Emotional Adjustment)

Seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA): Pathogenetic and therapeutic aspects. Focusing on seronegative RA, this review considers these concepts and their implications for the management of patients with this challenging, though sometimes overlooked, condition. PubMed, Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol, 2014 Aug;28(4):651-659. (Also see Antibodies of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Treatment of moderate rheumatoid arthritis with different strategies in a health resource-limited setting: a cost-effectiveness analysis in the era of biosimilars. This study explores the cost-effectiveness of reduced doses or discontinuation of etanercept biosimilar (Yisaipu) in patients with moderately active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). PubMed, Clin Exp Rheumatol, 12/01/2014. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Biologic Agents.)

Role of bone scan in the assessment of polymyositis/dermatomyositis. The findings of this study suggest that bone scan is a useful imaging technique for the evaluation of PM/DM patients. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 12/12/2014. (Also see Diagnosis of Dermatomyosis and Polymyositis)

Evaluation of Left Atrial Function by Real-time 3-D Echocardiography in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Real-time 3-D echocardiography may have better diagnostic value than traditional echo indexes in detecting subclinical cardiac dysfunction in patients with SLE. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 12/15/2014. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Chronic leg ulcers in adult patients with rheumatological diseases — a 7-year retrospective review. Management of chronic leg ulcers in rheumatological patients is challenging and careful clinicopathological correlation and treatment of the underlying cause is important. PubMed, Int Wound J, 2014 Dec;11(6):601-4. (Also see Leg and Foot Ulcers)

Increased risk of ischaemic stroke among patients with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is declared to be associated with an increased risk in developing stroke, which requires closer attention to this group of patients for stroke prevention, especially in the younger population. PubMed, Eur J Neurol, 11/29/2014. (Also see Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis)

Association Between Psoriasis and Asthma: A Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Analysis. Our study results indicate that patients with psoriasis are associated with increased risk of asthma development. PubMed, Br J Dermatol, 11/10/2014. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis)
