April 2015 Autoimmune News

Surface APRIL Is Elevated on Myeloid Cells and Is Associated with Disease Activity in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Surface APRIL is elevated in circulating myeloid cells in patients with RA where it is highly correlated with disease activity. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 03/01/2015. (Also see Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Treatment with belimumab restores B cell subsets and their expression of B cell activating factor (BAFF) receptor in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS). Targeting BAFF with belimumab is successful in normalizing B cell frequency, phenotype and functions in pSS. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 03/03/2015. (Also see Treatments for Symptoms of Sjogren's Syndrome and B Cells and T Cells)

Histopathology of Lung Disease in the Connective Tissue Diseases (CTD). This article will cover the pulmonary pathologies seen in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, myositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren syndrome, and mixed CTD. Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America, 03/06/2015. (Also see Connective Tissue Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis Diagnosis)

The effect of prior corticosteroid (CS) use in muscle biopsies from patients with dermatomyositis (DM). Previous CS use did not influence the presence or the degree of inflammatory infiltrates found in muscle biopsies in DM with clinical and laboratory disease activity. Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology Online, 02/20/2015. (Also see Diagnosis of Dermatomyositis)

Serum progranulin (PGRN) levels are elevated in dermatomyositis (DM) patients with acute interstitial lung disease, predicting prognosis. Serum PGRN is associated with disease activity and prognosis of DM with interstitial lung disease. Arthritis Research and Therapy, 02/18/2015. (Also see Mortality and Prognosis of Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis)

Central pathways causing fatigue in neuro-inflammatory and autoimmune illnesses. Peripheral inflammation and immune activation, likely account for the severe levels of intractable fatigue and disability seen in many patients with neuroimmune and autoimmune diseases. BMC Medicine, 03/06/2015. (Also see Fatigue)

Pulmonary Vasculitis. Pulmonary vasculitis encompasses inflammation in the pulmonary vasculature with involved vessels varying in caliber from large elastic arteries to capillaries. Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America, 03/06/2015. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Vasculitis)

Procoagulant microparticles are increased in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) but do not define a specific subset of clinical manifestations. Although inactive BD patients had high values of procoagulant MP, they did not differentiate between BD patients with or without thrombosis. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 02/26/2015. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Behçet's Disease)

Evaluation of early cardiac dysfunction in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with or without anticardiolipin antibodies. Identifying early cardiac involvement in SLE may lead to a reduction in mortality and morbidity rates. PubMed, Lupus. 02/18/2015. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

The role of antiphospholipid autoantibodies (aPL) in the cognitive deficits of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Results support the relationship between aPL and cognitive symptoms in SLE. PubMed, Lupus, 02/18/2015. (Also see Antibodies in Lupus)
