| Role of imaging in vasculitis and connective tissue diseases. Magnetic resonance imaging is the investigation of choice to detect and monitor brain disease, while computerized tomography is the best procedure for lung disease. However, since most imaging findings are not entirely specific for any given condition, it is important to interpret the results of imaging in the broader clinical context. N. Pipitone MD, PhD. (Science Direct) Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology Vol 22, Issue 6, December 2008, Pages 1075-1091. (Also see: Connective Tissue Disease, Vasculitis, and Medical Tests) | |
| Long-term Inhaled Nitric Oxide (iNO) Plus Phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitors for Severe Pulmonary Hypertension. Inhaled nitric oxide is a potent pulmonary vasodilator, but therapeutic experience in patients with severe pulmonary hypertension is scarce. We suggest iNO therapy alone or in combination with a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor could be a therapeutic alternative for severe pulmonary hypertension. G M Pérez-Peñate. (ScienceDirect) The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation Vol 27, Issue 12, Dec 2008, Pages 1326-1332. (Also see: Pulmonary Hypertension) | |
| Cyclophosphamide treatment improves microvessel damage in systemic sclerosis. Cyclophosphamide administration was significantly associated with amelioration of nailfold videocapillaroscopic pattern. P Caramaschi. (SpringerLink) Clinical Rheumatology. December 04, 2008. (Also see: Medications and Raynaud's) | |
| Evaluation of Heart Rhythm Variability and Arrhythmia in Children with Systemic and Localized Scleroderma. The most frequent cardiac arrhythmias in both types of scleroderma in children were of supraventricular origin, whereas ventricular arrhythmias did not occur very often. J. Wozniak. J Rheumatol Dec 1 2008. (Also see: Juvenile Scleroderma and Cardiac Involvement) | |
| Pain is Associated with Higher Physician Use in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis. Pain is common in SSc. In our sample, pain was strongly associated with physician use, even after adjusting for demographic and clinical variables. The results suggest the possibility that improved pain management could potentially reduce physician use in patients with SSc. Orit Schieir. (550) ACR/ARHP08. (Also see: Pain) | |
| Capillaroscopy. Capillaroscopy is the most reliable way to distinguish between primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon through identification of an early pattern of systemic sclerosis. | Therapeutic trials for systemic sclerosis: An update. The overwhelming need in this disease is to diagnose it early and identify those patients who will benefit most from early, aggressive treatment. We attempt to review data from recent clinical trials and the lessons derived. Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology. 2008 Vol 74 Issue 5 Page : 436-446. (Also see: Clinical Trials) | |
| Drug-Induced Arthritic and Connective Tissue Disorders. Drug-induced rheumatic syndromes are manifold and offer the clinician an opportunity to define an illness that may remit with discontinuation of the offending agent. Early diagnosis and withdrawal of the drug may prevent unnecessary morbidity and disability. Adam Mor MD Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism. Vol 38, Issue 3, Dec 2008, Pg 249-264. (Also see: Connective Tissue Disorders and Causes of Scleroderma) | |
| Demographic and Clinical Factors Associated with Physician Service Use in Systemic Sclerosis. There is evidence of independent relationships between clinical characteristics and physician use by patients with SSc. S. Bernatsky. J Rheumatol Nov 15 2008. (Also see: Physician/Patient Relationship) | |
| Shifting Our Thinking About Uncommon Disease Trials: The Case of Methotrexate in Scleroderma. From the trial data, clinicians can infer that MTX has a high probability of beneficial effects on skin score and global assessment. S. R. Johnson. J Rheumatol First Release Dec 1 2008.
