Symptoms of Sjogren's Syndrome. Sjögren's is a systemic disease, and its symptoms are felt throughout the entire body. Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation.
Main causes and risk factors for hospitalisation in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome. The major causes for hospitalisation were disease activity and infection and patients with hepatic involvement, vasculitis and more damage accrual had the highest risk for being hospitalised. PubMed, Clin Exp Rheumatol, 08/27/2015.
Prevalence of and factors associated with increased arterial stiffness in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Women with pSS had higher pulse wave velocity (PWV) than controls. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 2014 Oct 9.
Hippocampal atrophy is associated with cerebrospinal fluid anti-NR2 antibodies in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Anti-NR2 antibodies cause neuronal death observed as reduced hippocampal grey matter in patients with SLE and pSS as previously demonstrated in mice with autoimmune disease. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 2014 Aug 22. (Also see SLE Symptoms)
Diagnosis and treatment of primary Sjögren syndrome (PSS)-associated peripheral neuropathy: a six-case series. In PSS patients, a precise diagnosis is important, because the therapeutic strategy and response varies depending on the type of neuropathy. Springer, Modern Rheumatology, Sept 2013.
Severity and Neuropathic Pain symptoms in primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS): A comparison study of seropositive and seronegative Sjogren's syndrome. Chronic pain is pervasive in both seropositive and seronegative pSS patients, while pain severity and functional impairment is greater in seronegative patients. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 2013 Jan 17.
Neurological Disorders in Primary Sjögren's Syndrome. Neurological involvement ranges from 0 to 70% among various series and may present with central nervous system and/or peripheral nervous system involvement. PubMed, Autoimmune Dis, 2012;2012:645967.
Dry eyes are a symptom of Sjogren's syndrome.
Eye Problems Pain, redness and loss of vision are important problems that require medical attention. Eye problems can warn us of other health problems as well. familydoctor.org. (Also see Eye Involvement)
Dry Eye Disease Does Not Worsen With Time in Most Patients. Despite the general perception, dry eye disease does not necessarily worsen over time. Medscape, 12/30/2015.
Dry mouth is a symptom of Sjogren's syndrome.
Scleroderma Dental Involvement Scleroderma can cause many dental problems, including small mouth, dry mouth, bone reabsorption, receding ligaments, and TMJ. ISN.
Androgens and Integrins in Salivary Glands in Sjögren's Syndrome (SS). In SS salivary glands androgen regulation was defective, which is likely to contribute to defective outside-in signaling, acinar atrophy, and ductal cell hyperplasia. P.Parola. Journal of Rheumatology. May 1 2010.
Sjogren's Syndrome - 10 Things You Should Know. Some Sjogren's syndrome patients also experience dryness of the skin, vagina, nasal passages, and throat. VeryWell.
Quality of Sexual Life in Women with Primary Sjögren Syndrome (pSS). Both premenopausal and postmenopausal women with pSS have a worse sexual quality of life as they have a greater prevalence of dyspareunia. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 07/01/2015. (Also see Sexuality and Scleroderma)
Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) - Fatigue is an ever-present, fluctuating and uncontrollable lack of energy. Fatigue in pSS clearly differs from ordinary tiredness. Patients describe it as ever-present, fluctuating and non-relievable lack of vitality being beyond own control. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res, 2013 Dec 10. (Also see Fatigue)
Prevalence and clinical impact of fibromyalgia (FM) in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). The study showed that FM was prevalent in pSS and FM was associated with higher EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index and more severe depression. PubMed, Clin Exp Rheumatol, 08/27/2015. (Also see Fibromyalgia)
Gastrointestinal and hepatic manifestations of Sjogren syndrome (SS). Several studies show that hepatitis C virus (HCV) is in saliva, although how this may impact sicca syndrome or SS in HCV is unclear. PubMed, J Clin Gastroenterol. 2012 Jan;46(1):25-30.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Is Common in Never-smoking Patients with Primary Sjögren Syndrome (pSS). An obstructive pattern was the predominant pulmonary function test finding in patients with pSS, which suggest that superimposed restrictive lung disease per se is involved in the development of COPD. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 01/15/2015. (Also see Sjögren's Symptoms)
Renal involvement in primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The prevalence of renal SS, its presentation, likely pathogenesis and treatment is reviewed in this article. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 2015 Sep;54(9):1541-8. (Also see B Cells And T Cells)
Dermatologic manifestations of sjögren syndrome. Cutaneous manifestations have been underemphasized because they are often overshadowed by the more prominent sicca symptoms. However, certain skin findings are of paramount clinical and prognostic importance as they confer an increased risk for the development of life-threatening conditions. UnBound, J Cutan Med Surg, 2011 Jan-Feb; 15(1):8-14.
Pregnancy and fetal outcome in women with primary Sjögren's syndrome compared with women in the general population: a nested case-control study. Pregnancy occurs later in life in women with primary Sjogren's Syndrome (pSS). Mothers with pSS give birth to offspring with lower birthweight and less commonly have normal partus.
