  1. Fatigue

Hello everyone, haven't been on here in a whilebut have read posts.I'm just wondering how many of you have this awful fatigue.I've BEEN having it and it just flat wears me out.I don't feel like doing anything and when and if I do it tuckers me out big time! We had our 42nd wedding anniversary and I didn't feel like going anywhere just told my husband we'd go when I felt better,so far that hasn't happened. Also very short of breath,I do something that has to be done and have to stop because I'm losing breath and thats so scary! Not helping my weight problem either as I'm not doing as much as I used to.We'll be going to the dr.next week.I also hurt my back again I have a herniated disk and my back has been really hurting,we have a cold front coming and I know that won't help matters none.Hopefully internist can help me out with the back problem that would help as I don't feel like doing anything when I'm tired and in pain! I know it will get better, this is just a bad time for me and I'm hoping that soon it will all be better.I am feeling optimistic about getting help for the back at least.Maybe the fatigue I may just have to put up with although I don't have to like it! Take care everyone and keep smiling! Hugs to all,Mary-La.
  2. I really hope that I can do this on here.I know that in New Zealand its already Jan.6th.That happens to be David Knagg's birthday and I wanted to wish him a happy birthday. It also happens to be my oldest son's birthday as well and I remember Sherrill and I having that in common. So I wanted to wish David the very best birthday although I'm sure it could be very different for him now. So David have a good day and we think of you often. Mary
  3. A birthday wish for David Knaggs

Hi Shelley I sort of figured thats where I would find his greeting.I too miss Sherrill so much and I hope that David is doing okay.Do you happen to know how her mom is?Sherrill worried about her mom so much and she was up there in age so she had reason to be concerned. I hope that you and yours are doing well too.Oh and do yu ever hear from Heidi?I miss her too.Take care Shelley and thanks for always being there for us.Smiles,Mary
  4. Hello

I;m just wondering if anyone ever hears from Heidi I miss her and was just curious if anyone kept in touch with her.Mary

  6. Hurricane Ike

Well guys this is getting to be a habit.Had just barely gotten home from Gustav and here comes TERRIBLE IKE". We stayed home however and everything is okay but I was so scared I didn't sleep the noise of the winds from a hurricane are deafening and the rain was so hard. Our youngest daughter called from Houston at 5:00 am and it was there. They lost power and water and just got it back today she emailed me a few minutes ago. I know how miserable that had to have been as for Rita we were without power for 12 days but we did have water. When I watch tv now and see what happened everywhere here and in Galveston, Houston Orange and Bridge City Texas and all the parishes we're under I am so thankful that all is well here. Sure we were scared but that's nothing compared to what those poor people are going through. They did urge citizens of the low lying areas that they should get out but so many believed that he would go straight to Texas and got themselves in a bad bind when the waters started rising. The problem was that it was so large that it had a far reaching arm and got us in the mix too. I hope that's it for a while. It gets old. The low pressure of a hurricane does a number on the joints too as I was in lots of pain. Today the sun is out and water is receding in the places it was bad but there's still some that still can't enter. My daughter that lives about 30 miles from here told me a huge pine tree missed their home about 3 feet and hers was the only house on the block that had a tree fall. Luckily their home didn't flood either as it flooded really severe where she lives in Lake Charles La. So I hope I don't have to write about another I just feel so grateful for what I have. Hope all of you are as well as possible too. Love, Mary
  7. Hurricane Ike

Hi Janey and all of you who replied.Well we stayed because we had gone to Houston for "Gustav"and when we heard it would go in around Brownsville well we figured we're far enough away whcih we were.Houston wasn't an option anymore when we started hearing that he would go in to Galveston and that area but the thing is that he was so big and WIDE that it took the southwest coast too and I don't live near the coast either.this house we live in was built in 1953 it was the house my husband grew up in and like I said we've stayed for a couple of them before.LILY back in 02-03I can't remember. Now my daughter however lives in Lake Charles and thats close to the coast and she lives in a beautiful area that has lots of trees-good and bad there. They're good for shade and blocking winds but during a hurricane they also fall! theres also Contraband Bayou about two blocks behind her and it floods! luckily her home is on higher ground so that helped except for the one tree that did fall.I am hoping that everyone gets power soon we are so spoiled to our air conditioners and when we don't have it we're really miserable.I know the feeling about getting on the nerves when Rita hit in 05 sometimes I was ready to pull my hair out! And I must confess I took it out on my hubby.Bless him at night he would cover me with a huge damp bath towel so I could sleep! Made me feel a little small for jumping all over him when I know he was just as miserable as I was! Oh goodness I do ramble on please excuse an old lady! Just hope those poor folks can find a way to move on.Hope all are okay.Love Mary
  8. Hurricane Ike

Hi Shelley, I hope your son can get power soon, its so hot to be without it. I also am sure you've seen all the pictures they sure did get hit hard as did some of them here. A friend sent me some pics today and its really a wonder that anyone survived that. I cannot imagine what it would have been like if it had been a category 3 or 4 or even 5! We had a hurricane here in 1957 that was named Audrey and it happened in Cameron, Louisianna. Back then they didn't have the technology we have now and those poor people thought they had until the next day which was a Thursday but she came onshore during the night and early morning and 500 or more people died. Whole families were wiped out. I was only 12 at the time but I can remember us evacuating to the courthouse and we were miles from it. It was also one of those wide far reaching ones like Ike as we couldn't get home until they removed huge oak trees from the road. My husbands sister has a book about it and the stories are so sad. Just hope everything turns out okay for all as they have a long, long recovery. Be glad when the season is over. Love, Mary
  9. I am Hooked on a Blog

Oh good old Barbs we can count on her to bring us some laughter! Having joined about the same time that Barbs joined this board I also know personally how she never stops surprising you.I LOVE her blogs as well. She's also such an inspiration as she has really been through the mill in the last years.I'm so glad that now she can enjoy herself.Just wish sometimes she could put me in one of her bags when she goes to Greece again lol.Keep it up Barbs we depend on you to keep us laughing.I als know full well about the goose stories as for a long time we had some,as well as ducks and chickens too.I really miss having all that now but the coyotes are just too bad to try to have anything like that anymore.Hugs to all.Mary--- Oh and Barbs,You're not old it was just an expression.I know I am though!
  10. To Mary in LA

Hi Janey just read your post.Well its not looking for Ike and I'n having to convince my husband to leave. You know they can be hardheaded! Anyway we'll keep watcing and hope nothing comes of it.Thanks for thinking of me.Mary
  11. Well my husband and I had to evacuate AGAIN (Hurricane Rita 3 years ago). This time our oldest daughter and husband and grandchild took us to Houston to our youngest's house.A trip to Houston from where we live here in La.is about 3 hours. It took us 7 hours to get there and that was before mandatory evacuations were announced. We arrived at 6:10 and all went to bed and didn't get up until 3 that afternoon. Its so hard when you don't feel good my poor husbands feet were so swollen I wound up giving him my Lasix. It helped him.My son-in-law is a chef so next morning we had eggs.sausage biscuits, fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh strawberries and cantaloupe. My daughter would fix my bath water for me and make sure I got in and out safely.Made me feel good that I had raised them right. It just took the wind outt of my sails though I don't travel well anymore and doon't go too far anyway. We were given the okay to come home and made it back in 5 hours and we traveled at night so it was much cooler.I hope the others stay away.WE had a lot of downed tree limbs and were without power for 3 days while we were gone but it was restored the day we got home.Still not good for so many others though here and I hope you'l keep them in your thoughts as they are going through a lot right now.I'm glad to be home and safe though and hope all of you are doing as best as you can.Love and hugs,Mary
  12. Hurricane Gustav-Gone but not forgotten

Hey all of you thanks for your nice replies.I tell you though that trip really ;took it our of me.I just can't seem to bounce back from the trip, guess being that it was so long and so stressful I watched my daughter have to fight traffic with some people that just don't seem to have 'common sense'.They just try to cut you off first chance they get.I forgot to mention that we also evacuated our pets as well. Now that was funny. My daughter and I rode in her car with the two cats in their own little 'pet taxis'and my husband and son-in-law with our two little dogs. And then my daughter that lives in Houston has 2 cats and a dog of her own so it was an interesting few days.My little teacup chihuahua takes nothing from no one no matter how big they are.my daughter has a miniature greyhound and if he came around her she would fuss at him and he'd go hide! Very funny.but they all figured out one day I guess that we were there for a while so they'd better get along so they behaved.I forgot to also mention one night my son-in-law prepared steaks for all to their liking with potatoes and onions and then we had cake and ice cream for dessert.I told my daughter who is petite that its a good thing she doesn't gain weight,if I ate like that all the time I'd be a lot bigger and I'm big enough -too much as it is! it was good to indulge though.Janey mu grandaughter lives in Baton Rouge also and I still haven't heard from her how her house is.She bought it just last year and she gets married in December is attending LSU on a full scholarship so needless to say we're very proud of her.She also works 30 hours a week, and still maintains good grades! Don't know how she does it but she's young so I guess thats part of it.Hope your friends home is okay as well.hugs to all and lets hope for better weather soon.Like in December maybe lol.Mary
  13. A hummingbird experience

Well I'm jumping in rather late on this topic but I also live in the country.I also love hummers and the other day my husband called me out to the front porch to see something so beautiful! A swallowtail huge butterfly was sipping nectarfrom the hummingbird feeder. He let us get close enough to take a picture. My 7 year old grandaughter loves butterflies and has a huge colored illustrated book on butterflies and moths so I've seen a butterfly moth in pictures and they are pretty. We also have deer here and many a time will see them cross the road if we're on it late as we also have a casino about 12 miles from us.We actually came upon an accident where a car had hit a deer crossing the highway.Did lots of damage to the car but deer was okay.Take care all and lets keep these wildlife stories going they are gems.love Mary
  14. Results of cat scan

Hi everyone I finally went to my doctor appointment for results of cat scan and the news is good. Its just a small nodule just big enough for the chest x-ray to pick up. It hasn't changed and he doesn't feel its anything to worry about. In 3 months we'll do another and see if its still there etc. If it there still another cat scan but he said being I never smoked he's not too worried about it being lung cancer or something like that.So I'm happy and slept good last night. On the down side my daughter called me on her lunch hour and told me that one of her friends had just been diagnosed with scleroderma. She doesn't know the type yet and they've made her friend an appointment with a rheumatologist. She's going to give her my phone number so I can tell her all I know. She has a lot of the same symptoms I had, 'knots'on her legs, loss of hair on head, underarms, legs and lots of joint pain, I forgot to ask her if her skin was shiny or 'tight'. She did tell my daughter that she broke a glass last week as her hand suddenly just 'locked up' on her and the glass just slipped right out of her hand. This is a young woman in her 30's and has a 6 year old daughter who is a friend to my little grandaughter. Like I told my daughter I'm glad mine waited until I was older through raising children, etc,if I need to just stay in bed then I can but a young mother with a 6 year old cannot. So I'll help all I can my daughter told her to stay off the internet because she would get scared of what she saw. I will recommend this site to her when I speak to her. So I hope I can be of help to her. Anyway I hope all of you are doing as good as can be. Hugs and smiles to all, Mary
  15. Results of cat scan

Hi all and thanks for the replies.I too am so glad that I was diagnosed at a later age.I was 53 then and its 10 years later so now I'm waiting on medicare.2 years to go yet.Spoke to my daughter and her friend is not handling the news well. She said that she refused to take prednisone if it meant it would make her gain weight. My daughter tried to convince her to please listen to her doctors orders. My daughter also told me she has the mouth sores really bad even under her tongue with the 'chalky stuff'draining from them. That doesn't sound too good.Luckily she was already on pain meds as she also had degenerative disk disease the same thing my daughter had surgery for back in February of this year. She told me that her friend's mother had called and wanted to know everything that she knew about the disease and she told her she could only give her the information from her seeing me for the last 10 years and what I have and still go through. However she did print out some info from a dr who has it and gave it to her to read.(The mother, that is).She wanted to know all in case her and her husband may wind up taking care of her and her little grandaughter as theres no dad in the picture. He's an oncologist and is vacationing in Europe. He told her that what she had was serious-DUH- and they would discuss it when he got home.I'm so grateful for my good husband who has stuck through thick and thin with me-now I'm doing it for him as the dementia is not getting better and I know it won't.So I just continue taking this day by day.Oh sorry I'm blabbing on- Hugs -Mary
  16. I love to read

Oh wow I jumped in at just the right time! I LOVE to read and when I don't have something to read its like I've lost something. Mysteries are my favorites too, I also love John Grisham James Patterson Tom Clancy so many I can't remember their names. Fortunately my daughter in law has the same tastes I do in reading and brings me BAGS of books, which I devour. Not long ago I sent a bag back to their house with my son and she said "Where does your mom find the time to read all these books? He replied , She doesn't have a 5 year old and a 3 year old anymore to keep her from reading. I can't understand how someone can not like to read! It puts you in places and situations and fun and well you'll all know what I mean. I have lots of books too, in boxes on shelves you name it sometimes I wind up reading them more than once! Of course my siamese cat 'Stinker' knows when I want to read and will promptly curl up on the book! No matter I just ease the book out from under him and read anyway. Should see what he does to the newspaper! Well guess its time I finally go to bed! Mary
  17. Vet visit

Friday we had to bring our little dog to get her allergy shot. When we drove up someone we knew was taking one of his hunting dogs out of his truck and had a leash on her.I asked him"Problems"? and he said "Yes,putting her down.I said how sorry I was and that I'd had to do it before and knew how hard it was.I also patted the dog on her little head and the friend said "oh she's very friendly and loves people. He then went inside as they called him in right away.I told my husband why he was there as he hadn't heard why he was there with his dog.We sat and waited our turn and when he came out,I noticed right away that he had tears in his eyes and my heart really went out to him as I know how hard that must have been. When he got to the door I said "It was good to see you and have a nice day.He thanked me and left and then I realized what I'd just said and felt just utterly stupid.'Have a nice day"when he had just had to put his little dog to sleep. My husband said I was being too hard on myself as I had good intentions when I said that and he probably appreciated me saying something period.I still felt stupid though and can't get it out of my mind.I wish now that I would have just gone outside and talked to him but I was afraid that they might call us in.My husband with his memory problems might not have remembered anything the vet would tell him so I had to be there.Anyway just wanted to get it off of my chest,I always hate to see things like that but its a fact of life that wecan't always keepur precious pets with us and that sometimes putting them down is the best thing to do to keep them from suffering.I hope all are okay and hanging on daily.Mary
  18. A little frightened

Hi all got a call from hospital where I did chest x-rays not long ago. It showed a 'spot'on lungs that my dr.is concerned about and yesterday made appointment for cat scan to further test what this might be. I'm scared a bit but think it may be just something left over from the horrible larngnitis and cold I had just before seeing dr. So hoping all will be okay and I can continue as I am doing. Will let you know results when I have them the appointment is Aug.4th. also having pft and bone density again. Hugs and best to all,Mary
  19. For Cat Lovers/Owners

Oh wow how excting cat lovers! I have 3 -Weezer is 18- Chi-Chi is about 7 and Stinker is 3 years/Stinker is the worst for throwing himself down in front of us and not moving.I also taught him a trick. When he was just a kitten one day I picked him up and he stretched out his paws in a big wide stretch.Since then all I have to say is "mama wants a 'stretch'and no matter what his position is on me he will immediately stretch,my friends and family get the biggest kick out of that.Chi-chi loves to be patted but theres a certain place on her side that NOBODY can touch otherwise she will hiss and paw or bite you! And Weezer the 'old man'of the house is very vocal and we treat him with kid gloves as he's so old and fragile now-like us lol.We also have 2 small dogs Bijou is a purebred teacup chichuachua and weighs maybe 2 pounds and Winnie is a mix of chichuachua and something else. She too has allergies and we have to bring her to get allergy shots, but she doesn't have fleas so I think its just a skin allergy of some kind.I love my animals so much they bring so much joy and make us laugh and thats what we all need a good laugh every day.hugs-Mary
  20. Scleroderma Causes

I did forget to mention that I suffered with bowel problems from the time I was a childThe other biggie was that I had endimetriosos (sp,).For me it was torture and after having my last child at 30 had a hysterectomy. It was the best releif I ever had until I discovered that it was genetic and sure enough my youngest daughter was diagnosed with it a few years back.So it goes on and on-anyway someday we may be able to say I once had diffuse sd,fibro, herniated disk, peripheral neuropathy, sjogrens and all the other stuff, but now they found a cure and I'm well now. That is something to look forward to.I hope it happens in our lifetime.Hugs to all.Mary
  21. Scleroderma Causes

I too had lots of stress.Have had ulcerative colitis for many years,In early 80's developed a rash on arms and elbows that doctors.just could not figure out what it was.they finally found something that got rid of it.Then husband took a job in Venezuela and I worked in housekeeping at a local casino.I will ALWAYS believe that its the chemicals that we used on walls floors bathrooms glass and everywhere else that caused my diffuse sc diagnosis.Of course proving it is another thing but I do know that prior to being exposed to that I didn't have too many problems except for the uc and it is a huge problem on its own.So it seems that a lot of others were exposed to chemicals as well so thats got to be something there.Anyway its there and I take it day by day how else is there to cope?I always say things could be worse! Hugs to all. kittyears.
  22. For Cat Owners/Lovers

Its funny about how fleas affect cats differently. My oldest cat is 18 years old and I also had his brother. The white cat was never bothered too mch by them,I also use the monthly drops but his poor brother the gray one would just scratch and bleed and have sores too.One thing about it though if he stayed in the sun it would dry all up and his beautiful fur would grow out again.Somehow that cat knew he needed to be outside so every morning when it was at its worst,he'd go to the door and I'd let him go out. He'd pick a spot in the sun and I don't care how hot it would get he'd stay out all day and in the afternoon he'd come back in.In no time at all he would heal up.Other than that an allergy shot is all that would work besides that.He is now in cat place and I miss him very much but like I said I still have the brother thats all white,Ko-Ko was all gray and fluffy Weezer is solid white and shorthaired and I'm sure that helps too shorter fur.I have the same problem with my two little dogs I'm forever having to bring the one for an allergy shot and I also use the flea drops on them. She doesn't like to be outside though I let them out and as soon as she's done with her bathroom needs she's right back in the house. On the other hand the one that doesn't need the sun is the one who likes to be in it.Crazy huh?I hope yu can find something to help your kitty I hate to see them suffer with anything they're such fun to have around.sometimes its me,hubby 2 dogs and 3 cats all sleeping in the king sized bed!Take care I think I might turn in now I might be able to sleep! I hope.Hugs -kittyears
  23. Dr. visit today

Hi all well finally made it to see internist today. Had blood work, pap smear all last week and results are in. Sed rate-good, calcium-good, potassium good, liver function good, cholesteral -good-blood sugar all good! Lost 10 pounds and thats REAL good as I have been trying so hard to lose it. However the news about my groin pain-they took a chest ray and x-rays of my hips. The dr,said that when someone is on prednisone as long as I have been (1998) its bound to do some damage one being the fact that I do have osteoporosis-this is called vascular necrosis and knowing that although I'm only on 5 mgs,its still done damage because its been so long I'm on them. How I hate that stuff! I told him I'd get off them if thats the case as I don't want some more side effects such as these! He also mentioned the fact that it was all my rheumatologist had me on then I'd better discuss with him which I will do. On the down side I have to do another barium enema (YUK) and another PFT and a bone density. My husband also has to do a barium enema as he's never had one and he's past 65 so its time! His tests were good too except for his diabetes AIC number it was a very high 9. So he gave him another med and said to increase the one he's taking by one whole one instead of a half. He will soon be taking as much meds as I do. He did lose the 7 pounds though so we were glad with that. He must exercise more though and stay away from the foods I tell him he's not supposed to have. We were so tired when we got home and glad that we don't have to go anywhere tomorrow so we can sleep late! Was able to see my youngest son as he lives in the same town where my doctors. are oldest daughter lives there too in fact only about 2 blocks from her little brother but she was at work. I am pleased with my tests though and especially the weight lost. I'd been trying and told my husband I hoped my scale and the doctors would match in numbers and they did so I will keep working at it. The hardest part is to exercise as its painful just to walk so I do what I can when I can. Anyway that's my visit and I'm glad its over until a couple of weeks when I do the tests. Take care all of you and SMILE! hugs Mary-La.
  24. A pet "Miracle"

I hope no one gets offended that I'm not writing anything about sclero but this is something heartwarming I thought all would enjoy especially all of us who have pets. Please bear with me as its a long story. Two and a half years ago here in southwest La.we got hit by Hurricane Rita this was Sept 24th not long after New Orleans and Katrina.WE had to evacuate so we went to our son't houseand brought our pets with us.My oldest daughter however couldn't bring her old cat that she has had since her daughter was 3 years old.Her daughter is now 21.So she put the cat plenty of food and lots of water knowing full well that the raccoons would probably come and eat her cat food. She had a little house outside with her blankets etc and a place to get out of the rain. She couldn't bring her to her daughter's house as her roomates had huge dogs and Meme is quite old and the apartment was just not big enough for the people that would be staying etc. They were gone for 2 weeks and were allowed to come back into the city to have a 'look and then leave'to see if their homes and all were okay. They had lost huge oak trees but the house still was there.Meme had survived although she was starving so my daughter fed her once again then had to leave again.Fast forward they came home and all was good until one day a pack of roaming dogs came into her yard and chased the poor old cat into a corner,my son-in-law got after them and then called the city to complain about the dogs. They both work so the city came and found no dogs and left them a note saying that there was nothing to be found.Well the cat was also gone and my daughter figured that they had probably chased her somewhere in the neighborhood and she had probably expired somewhere else as they don't like to die around home.My little grandaughter was so hurt as she had gotten used to the old cat as well.A month ago my daughter and husband were at a large home improvement center and my grandaughter wanted to go next door to see the pets at the pet store. They walk in and in the first cage is an old white cat! My daughter looked at her husband and said 'could it be her?.She then said her name and the cat tried to come through the cage to gt to her! They asked the associate if they could take her out of the cage and she said it would be okay.My daughter checked for the scar from her 'fixing'and she had another scar from having had a tumor removed. While they're checking out the cat she is purring and is all over them! They looked for one more mark to prove it was her and it was there as well.My little grandaughter is crying now for them to bring her back home and they did. When they got to the house and let her down she immediately went to the room that belonged to the oldest grandaughter and curled up in her bed like she always did before. My daughter called me and told me this and I was just amazed two and a half years and she got her back.I was there Friday and played with her,my old cat that I have is now 18 years old and was out of the first litter of kittens she had before being fixed. My oldest grandaughter who lives elsewhere now at first didn't believe her mom and said there was no way it could be her until my daughter sent her the pictures online and she said 'yep thats my old Me-me.Of course now Me-Me is having to share the house and family with 2 other cats they got while thinking she was dead.Poor old cat one wonders where she wound up after they couldn't find her but 'Animal Angels'were the ones that brought her to the pet place to try to find someone to adopt her. They found someone all right her real family.I hope you'll enjoyed my story I look at that cat now when I',m there and still find it hard to believe.Hope all of you are handing things okay and day by day.Smiles and hugs to all.Mary-La.
  25. A pet "Miracle"

Im so glad you'll all enjoyed my tale,(cat tail lol). Its just sounds so amazing that somethng like that happens but that proves she was meant to be with my daughter and family.I too have 3 cats like I said one of them being Me'me 's offspring and poor baby he is now 18 years old and so sweet.the others are Stinker a siamese and che-che an orange and white female. We also have 2 small dogs bijou is a teacup chihuachua and weighs maybe 3 pounds if she's lucky and Winnie a mix of chihuachua and something else.We have to bring her to the vet a tleast once a month to get an allergy shot as she has a bad skin allergy.Funny how they know when we're sick if I'm having a bad attack of ulcerative colitis they're all trying to crowd into my small bathroom to see how theycan 'help'.They can 'sense'illness I guess..They keep us company as all our 4 children have all left the 'nest'and its just me and hubby.I hope all of you are starting the week feeling pretty good.Smiles and hugs to all,Mary
