  2. Should all digital ulcers (DUs) be included in future clinical trials of systemic sclerosis (SSc)–related digital vasculopathy? We would encourage the expert SSc community to reconsider the rationale for including only fingertip DUs in future SSc clinical trials, and suggest an agenda for future research. PubMed, Med Hypotheses, 2018 Jul;116:101-104. (Also see Research on Digital Ulcers) This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. Digital ulcer

Hi, I have been a systemic sclerosis patient for over 12 years now. I am 31 years old. Along the way I developed several digital ulcers on my fingertips. However, for the first time in 12 years I have developed one such ulcer on the right big toe. It is on the corner where the nail meets the skin. It is very painful and uncomfortable. I cannot wear closed shoes because it is painful and if I wear open footwear, I am either stepped upon or I hit my foot into daily objects. Have any of you experienced ulcers on your feet? If yes, can you please tell me how you dealt with it and things you did to make it less painful . Thanks!
  4. Ultrasound (US) characterization of cutaneous ulcers in systemic sclerosis (SSc). US may support the assessment of morphology and extent of skin ulcers in SSc and can be a helpful tool for detecting underlying pathology. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 03/10/2018. (Also see Digital Ulcers) This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. Please check the newsroom daily for updates on scleroderma and other related articles.
  5. Doctors discover new method to heal painful diabetic ulcers using a jab of 'muffin top' fat. Doctors have discovered an ingenious use for the excess fat — they are using it in injections for painful foot ulcers that are difficult to treat. Mail Online, 12/02/2017. 6. Defining a unified vascular phenotype in systemic sclerosis. The more recent biomarker longitudinal studies support the concept of generalized vasculopathy and a potential association between various cardiovascular complications. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 11/16/2017. (Also see Vascular Involvement and Digital Ulcers) This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. Please check the newsroom daily for updates on scleroderma and other related articles.
  7. I am in so much pain with a digital ulcer. Developed about 2.5 months ago. The tissue has died. Can anyone suggest what I can do speed up healing process. Constant burning and painful. I had iloprost infusions but reacted badly to it.
  8. The critical need for accurately defining digital ulcers in scleroderma. The high unmet need for a standardized method of defining digital ulcers is a major challenge not only for treatment, but also for development of new therapies. Journal of Scleroderma and Related Disorders, JSRD 2017; 2(2): 69 - 71. (Also see Digital Ulcers) This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. Please check the newsroom daily for updates on scleroderma and other related articles.
  9. Reduced perfusion in systemic sclerosis digital ulcers (DUs) (both fingertip and extensor) can be increased by topical application of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN). DUs (both fingertip and extensor) were responsive to topical GTN, with an increase in perfusion to the ischaemic DU centre. PubMed, Microvasc Res, 2016 Dec 24;111:32-36. (Also see Treatments for Digital Ulcers: Topical) This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. Please check the newsroom daily for updates on scleroderma and other related articles.
  10. Calcinosis is associated with digital ischaemia in systemic sclerosis (SSc) – a longitudinal study. Ischaemia may play a role in the development of calcinosis in SSc. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 09/04/2016. (Also see Calcinosis and Digital Ulcers This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. The results of our study suggest that ESWT has the potential to be a novel and efficacious treatment for digital ulcers associated with SSc, and can be added to pharmacological therapy. Journal of Scleroderma and Related Disorders, JSRD 2016; 1(2): 181 - 185. (Also see Treatments for Digital Ulcers in Scleroderma) This item was posted in the ISN Newsroom. Raynauds

I hope some of you can give me helpful information. My brother has been diagnosed with several auto immune diseases. One of them is Raynauds. Right now his fingers are in a terrible condition: black, drainage from around the nail, sensitivity in the fingers, etc. They are a mess. He is wearing gloves, on several medications and is being seen by a rheumatologist. Do any of you have this type of condition with your fingers and to the extreme like his fingers. We are very concerned that he may lose some of his fingers by just the appearance. Any helpful comments in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
