What are the symptoms of Biliary Cirrhosis?

6 posts in this topic

Does anyone have this? If you do, I would really appreciate knowing what your symptoms are? Thanks

Hi Enjoytheride,

Are you feeling okay or have you flunked a blood test? Either way I send my best wishes to you, in hopes you are better soon.

As I understand it (and keep in mind I have no medical training at all), you can have biliary cirrhosis, which is a form of liver involvement, without any symptoms at all. It usually just shows up on a routine blood test. Even if you have it, it typically takes a decade or so for liver failure to set it.

Symptoms of liver problems can include jaundice, itchiness, and enlarged liver, and there are different types of liver problems. Some people have biliary cirrhosis all by itself (like, without scleroderma) which is called Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. And some people develop it secondary to scleroderma.

Are you having any liver symptoms, or have you flunked a liver blood test? Sometimes liver tests are elevated just due to medications and when the meds are reduced or stopped, things go back to normal sooner or later. So its not unusual to flunk a liver test but in the long run the liver turns out to be a-okay. However its nothing to take too lightly either, so do go for any follow-up testing that your doctor recommends.

I have had bouts of pain under my rib cage on the right side accompanied by lack of bile. (I can't believe I'm actually talking about this on the internet-argh. Gross yuk........)

But as far as I can tell, the liver enzymes on blood tests have been normal.

I'm just frustrated with this problem and am fishing for direction.

It lasted for months one time and since has come back periodically.

I have read about it and had decided that since it comes and goes, it can't be cirrhosis but I can't get any answer as to what it is. Diet doesn't seem to matter.

I definitely improved when I started the hydroxychloroquin. Now it is not very frequent. Probably just going to be one of "those" things with this condition.

My liver enzymes were raised to 95 (normal count is 40 or below) but I had no noticeable symptoms or pain and it was solely due to the medication (Azathioprine) I was taking. Once the dosage was reduced then my liver count went back to normal (I can even risk the occasional G&T!! ;) )

I'm happy to hear that a reduction of medication helped bring your liver enzymes back to normal. One always likes the thought of taking lower doses or stopping and particular drug. Joelf, and enjoytheride, keep us informed on your health.

Hi enjoytheride,

I have had slightly elevated liver chemicals for years on routine blood work. They thought it might be my cholesterol med, so they had me stop it for awhile. The only change in my bloodwork was my cholesterol went back up.

However, a couple of years ago I entered into the DNA registry for sclero. I got a letter from them saying one of the blood tests they do showed I MAY have biliary cirrhosis. I was instructed to see my doctor. My primary care physician did an ultrasound of my liver and it was perfectly fine. Then he sent me to my gastro doctor and he did more blood work. He determined that my liver is okay. I guess what I'm trying to say is, to have it checked out. With our disease, you can never take anything for granted. Let us know how it goes.

Peace :)
