Swollen finger joints ..

4 posts in this topic

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with Scleroderma, and have been taking medication for almost year and half ..

Fingers of both my hands are swollen, expecially the joints and are very painful. Also the joints are very dark in color as compared to rest of my finger. The worst part is, the center part of joints are lighter and the surroundings are very dark ..

Wanted to know, if this is common thing in scleroderma. Is there any way, to reduce the pain and swelling ?

Hi and welcome to the forum :emoticons-yes: so sorry youve got scleroderma. Sadly, what you are suffering with your hands is very common. Most of us suffer with this problem in varying degrees!! I can only talk about my experience though. I do have swollen fingers and joints. Some days are worse than others you will probably find that too. The pain you have is very common. I cope by doing the following:

a) Keep the hands and fingers moving....massage them gently and stretch them out, i.e. flat on a table or if you're sitting on your thigh as much as you can bear to.

B) Keep them warm at all costs. If they are cold they hurt more! :temper-tantrum:

c) Keep them moisturised and supple as much as you can especially after washing or bathing :VeryHappy:

d) Take a good pain-killer from your doctor/rheumatologist

I know that its hard when your sitting there thinking is this how it is and getting scared but don't be. There's always someone who will listen and though we aren't doctors we can share our experiences with you!!

Take care and warm thoughts to you :bye:

Lynn

Hi aarti.

Welcome to the sclero forums. I'm glad you've joined us, but sorry it's due to ill health. I think what you are describing is fairly common unfortunately. Lynnie gave you excellent advice.

Good luck and keep us posted. :flowers:

Hello Aarti

Welcome to the forums and yes finger problems are very, very common in scleroderma. In the beginning my hands were swollen, stiff and painful and have now settled on sclerodactyly. Well at least they don't hurt anymore!

Take care and keep posting.
