Hypothyroidism, primary biliary cirrhosis and scleroderma

Recommended Posts

Following my horrible rheumatology appointment (!) and feeling more awful than ever, I can hardly get out of bed in the morning, I went back to my general practitioner who arranged for me to have some blood tests. It looks as if I'm developing PBC (primary biliary cirrosis) and may need a referral to a hepatologist, but I have also been immediately started on thyroxine as I'm really suffering from hypothyroidism. This explains the terrible exhaustion I',m feeling. This is now 3 autoimmune conditions. Does anyone else have all 3 conditions and have experience of this?

Hello Inkedup

I know of people with scleroderma who have primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and people with scleroderma who have hypothyroidism but can't recall anyone else with all three, sorry!

It's very hard to have fatigue from scleroderma and another illness, I have scleroderma fatigue and fatigue from heart failure caused by myocardial fibrosis caused by scleroderma. Last time I saw my rheumatologist he described it as having a double whammy of fatigue and boy do I know it spending more time each day asleep than awake.

I hope the thyroxine helps the fatigue and how do they treat PBC?

Take care.

Hi Inkedup,

Like Amanda, I'm afraid I've never heard of anyone having all three conditions:- primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), hypothyroidism and Scleroderma at the same time although we do have quite a few of our members who have more than one auto immune disease.

I am sorry to hear that you've experiencing so many problems at the moment. The fatigue must be so debilitating and must make everything you have to do a real effort.

I do hope that the hepatologist can advise you and prescribe something to improve your quality of life.

Kind regards,

I have free prescriptions because of an under active thyroid, an auto immune condition. You could say it's one of the best benefits from having Scleroderma. It's saved pounds over the years. Apply for your free prescriptions; you will not regret it.
