Does anybody know name of a pill that slows down the bowel?  (Stopping the running to the loo.)

Not the ones you can buy from shops.

Loperamide is the one I got prescribed but it is basically the main content of Imodium and other over the counter stuff. If the bowel is overactive and going into spasm like mine does, try mebeverine which is an anti-spasmodic. My Dr prescribed this - 2 tablets 20 mins before a meal and it has helped.

Also get some diet information - a dietician will help you to reduce discomfort and evacuation by eliminating foods that might be causing a problem for you.

It never goes away but it does improve. Well mine has. I have also found cutting out coffee and other caffeine drinks has made a HUGE difference to my whole GI tract.

Hope that helps Christine - sending a smile!

Hello Christine

You really need to discuss this with your doctor if you are going to self medicate so that nothing interacts with any medication you are already on.

There are most certainly things that can help, as Jac has said, eliminating caffeine and certain foods can make a huge difference. I recently suffered over 2 weeks of nausea/vomiting and diarrhea because of so many doses of IV antibiotics. The doctor recommended a probiotic drink to help restore the good bacteria into my digestive system, I tried it and noticed a difference almost immediately. I now take this *probiotic drink twice a day and will continue to do so evermore having been left with colitis. The doctor also said to avoid green leafy vegetables and all fruit except bananas because it's too hard on the bowel, we always think of salad as healthy and it certainly is but sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge for our digestive systems!

Finding something that helps could be a long process as you try different things to see what works for you but you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Take care and let us know how you get on.

*If you PM me I can give you the name of the probiotic drink.
