Father in law newly diagnosed, husband works in ceramics.

Recommended Posts

My father in law was just diagnosed with systemic scleroderma; it seems to be moving fast into his lungs.

As I research more about scleroderma, I am learning that exposure to silica dust can trigger it. My husband works with tile and ceramics and has constant exposure to silica dust. I believe he should stop immediately due to possible genetic inheritance and the silica dust being a bad combination. He is telling me I’m overreacting, perhaps I am?

Does anyone have any knowledge or advice they can share? I’m feeling very overwhelmed.

Hi Vildan,

Welcome to these forums!

I'm sorry to hear that your father in law has been diagnosed with scleroderma, with possible lung involvement.

Occupational exposure to silica is a known cause of scleroderma. It is legally recognized as an occupational disease in many countries, including the United States. I've included a link to our medical pages on Causes of Scleroderma: Silica, which I hope you'll find helpful and informative.

Kind regards,
