Cortisone Injections

6 posts in this topic

Good morning all!! I went to my rheumatologist yesterday because I have been having such terrible pain in my r.hip and l.knee. It's been so bad I could hardly walk. I am always super stiff after I have been sitting for even just a few minutes, not only when I get up in the morning, but for the last 3 weeks, it's been super bad. I always have joint pains as well, but for the last 3 weeks, those two joints have been super horrible. ....Anyways.... She gave me cortisone injections in those joints yesterday. I know I have osteoarthritis in my hips, knees and back (seen on xrays). Also, it's not the first time I've had injections in those joints. After I have them, the pain is almost gone and it last's sometimes up to 6 months. My question is....is it safe to keep getting these??My husband was told you can't get them multiple times in the same area, but that was 20 years ago. Has anybody had them?? Does anyone know if you can safely get them over and over? Thanks for your imput!!

Peace :)

Good morning to everyone. I have had some experiance with Cortisone Injections. I have bone spirs in my big toe and I have had an injection for that. I also just recently have had injections into my neck, close to the bottom of my scull, for migraines and my neck and shoulders. My Neurologist, works in a pain center and they use these injections for pain alot. I asked how often I could have the injections and he said 4 or 5 times a year. But I have heard as far as feet go that that these injections are not good to repeat to often. Apparantly they can turn the said area to mush, so who knows. I found that it worked for my big toe but not so much for my migraines and neck and shoulder pain because I still have this pain big time. Good luck to you.

Hi Barbara - I too get the shots about once every three/four months or so. I get them in my elbows and sometimes my ankles. They help me alot. If I don't get them I have to take pain meds and I'm not crazy about that. I have no idea which is worse- anybody have an opinion? -Ann

Hi,

I have had my shoulder injected once and I've never needed it done again. That was about 4 years ago.

It is not the best idea to get repeated injections. The steroids will destroy the joint over time. However once a year wouldn't hurt.

Warm and gentle hugs,

Hi

My husband gets cortisone injections in his worn out old knees (as he calls them) and his doctor has told him that he shouldn't get more than 5-6 shots per knee a year.

Thanks everybody!! I usually go about 5 to 6 months between, so I shoud be ok. I had one in my heel one time for a bone spur and it did the trick and I haven't had to repeat that one. But so far as my knees and hips, as the doctor put it the other day when she examined my knee, you know put her hand on it and moved my leg up and down, she said" bone on bone, no wonder you hurt"....

Peace :)
