Swelling In Fingers During Exercise

9 posts in this topic

Hello,

I have noticed that my fingers are painfully swollen and white with reddish purple tips whenever I exercize. Do you think that this is part of raynauds or something else? This has happened for a long time but seems to be getting worse, and with the weather being so warm (in the 90's) I would never expect Raynauds.

What do you all think? Is this a pretty common thing?

Hi, Erin. I am not sure about the swelling, but I do notice my Raynaud's kicks up whenever I put my body into stress - even when I go to the toilet. Is it possible that the swelling is there all the time and you just feel pain from it when you exercise?

Warm wishes,

Jefa

Hi Erin,

The same thing happens to me except my fingers do eventually turn a nice dark blue. It is hot here too but I know it is from the raynaud's. Most people tell me it can't be from that because it is not cold (these are the one's who don't understand anyway). Stress definately puts my raynauds into full swing.

Hugs,

Lisa

my fingers sweel when its warm out too and when I work out, the only time it changes color is when im cold or stressed out about something. What I do is run them under cool water and rub them for a bit. And hold them up in the air. Hope this helps, Sam

Hi Erin,

I find that when I walk on a hot day that my fingers immediately swell and turn white. It is painful and nothing I do stops it except rest. I find it very had to attend all the town fairs in the summer, which I love to do, because of this problem. Sometimes it happens when I go to the mall in the winter...who knows. Wish I could offer more help then just letting you know you are not alone, but that is all I have at this time. Good luck...

Sue

Thanks for all of your wonderful thoughts and ideas! I guess I never thought about my body beeing is stress while on a walk. If that is the case, I wonder if it has anything to do with lack of oxygen....who knows, maybe it is just raynauds.

Hi,

I too have noticed that whenever I exercise my hands/fingers become swollen and hard to close all the way (my right hand is especially affected). I try to keep opening and closing my hands when exercising and this help a bit. My husband and I recently were hiking in Yosemite and I could barely close my hands toward the end of the hike.

I have an appointment next week with a cardiologist at UCSF who specializes in autoimmune diseases and I plan to ask her this question ... I'll keep you all posted.

Take care,

Angie

If anyone finds anything out regarding why this happens, please post your findings. I have also noticed this and do the hands over my head thing.
