Heartburn Relief?

25 posts in this topic

Hi Erin,

I thought I would just add my two cents worth. As everyone has said, every drug works differently for different people. I tried Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec and Reglan and none of them helped my acid reflux or digestive problems. Finally when I started having esophageal spasms, my general practitioner prescribed Aciphex (I take one two times a day) and it has been a miracle drug for me. So, it really does seem to be trial and error with a lot of these meds.

I hope you get some relief soon. Please do keep us posted.

Warm wishes,

Heidi

Hi Erin,

The worst thing you can do is do nothing at all. I did that for a few years when my heart burn started because I thought it was nothing. Well I finally went to the dr because food was getting stuck in my throat. He did a scope and I had an ulcer in my esophogus, only 50% of it worked, I have Barrett's Esophogus and I found the end of my esophogus doesn't close the whole way so the acid come right back up! Don't let this damage be done to you! I have been on 80mg a day of protonix and it works, but not 100%. Partly because I will not give up food that I love....chili, salsa, chocolate. I have so many other limitations with this disease I will not let it totally control me!

Hugs,

Lisa

Hi Cathy,

Read back on some of the previous posts. There are several meds that work for hearburn and indigestion. The most important thing is to take them exactly as prescribed. If it says one hour befor a meal and you take it 10 minutes before or during a meal it isn't going to work properly. The reason you are suppose to take most reflux meds 1 hour before eating is to start a secretion process of acids so that when you do put food in your stomach it will digest properly. Most reflux medicines will continue working for up to 5 hours if you take them in the proper time tables. Good luck. Sheryl

Hi. Nexium saved me. Hopefully you find something that works for you. Heartburn, the burning is the worst. My husband joked that he would divorce just my stomach. Here's my two cents: don't laydown an hour after eating and don't eat too late.

Hi Erin, I have been to you know where and back with acid reflux. I had terrible chest pains for 2 years before something finally worked for me. I also had and still do have sometimes, the burning in the throat, the pains in the sternum area, bloating and gas, nice!!! This disease is so individulized, everyone here is so right, differant strokes for differant folks. I have tried, I believe most acid reflux meds out there. Now, I take two Protonix 40 mg., per day and OTC Priolosec once a day. I also take two tablespoons of Extra Strength Mylanta as needed. I was on Reglan for a couple of years and the side affects were really bad for me. I was also put on Domperidon from Canada, which apparantly works quite well for alot of Sclero patients, but again bad side affects for me. Erythromycin Est was tried as a last resort, but again I couldn't handle the side affects. My rheumatologist tried to put me on Prednisone for the body pain, it gave me acid reflux so bad he had to take me off of it, which is a shame because it does help alot of people. I hope you find relief soon, we all know what your going through. Take care and good luck to you.

Just for the record, Prilosec and Nexium are almost identical drugs, made by the same company. Nexium was developed just as Prilosec was about to go "over-the-counter." My doctor claims Nexium is the same as Prilosec, only more expensive.

As for the OTC antacid that turns your tongue brown, why not try another one. The one I use, I've never noticed a brown tongue. I also think they taste better and work just as well.

Okay,

well I did try to get some samples from the Dr. unfortunatly, they dont give out samples, so I will try some of the things here that you all have mentioned.

It sounds like Nexium is a good one, (and the same as Prilosec), so first on my list to try! Drinking LOTS more water is also on my list!

Thanks for all of your help...

Erin, At least you tried to get something from your Doctor. If you have a regular family doctor maybe he would let you try some. For the time being though I guess buying the over the counter Prilosec will have to do you for now. Sheryl
