I'm New Here :)

14 posts in this topic

Hello all. I'm new to these boards. Just wanted to introduce myself and explain my condition. I've had linear morphea for about 18 years. I was diagnosed at age 5. I've been blessed in my case as I have not had many of the symptoms associated with morphea like skin or joint tightening, pain, or any general symptoms. I do have really severe constipation though. I have the plaques all over my left leg, which keeps me from wearing shorts, bathing suits or anything thats shows my legs :(

Recently I had seen a new dermatologist and I got started with UVA-1 light therapy. Because of problems with my insurance, i haven't been able to go back. Seeing a dermo that has compassion and is actually willing to help in any way they can seems near impossible. So right now I wait. I had just recently stopped taking Plaquenil which I had been on for over a year, and the reason why I think I have advanced gingivitis now. I've been a guinea pig for most of my life and I'm waiting for something that will work for me. I'm hoping to learn new things from the people here and to be able to relate to other people with my condition. :)

Welcome to the forum! Lot's of good info and a great support system here. I didn't know that there is a connection between Plaquenil and gingivitis.

I may have Scleroderma, but Scleroderma doesn't have me!

Welcome mermaidgirl to our great group of worldwide friends. I have never read anything about Plaquenil possibly causing gingivitis. I am sorry you have to deal with that issue on top of other things relating to our diseases. You have a great name even though you don't wear shorts or swimwear. You shouldn't deny yourself some of the small pleasures in life by worrying about your plaques. It is not someone else's business to make you feel afraid to enjoy lounging in shorts. Mine either as a matter of fact, but so many people miss out on so much in life because of what others may say or how they will react. Enjoy life, we only get one chance at it. Make the most of it.

Strength and Warmth,

Sheryl

Hi Mermaidgirl!

You've found the right site. The friends here are a wonderful group of people who I wish I could surround my life with physically everyday. Here, I can chat, compare, complain, share recipes and just be part of each other's lives.

You will find up to date information on this site, links, etc., but most importantly, contact with people who share your very illness.

We often compare, question and ask for advice and get great responses and caring natures.

Welcome aboard and hope to hear from you often. :)

Thank you for the replies! Actually I'm not 100 percent certain the Plaquenil caused the gingivitis, but I ruled everything else out as a possibility and it had happened shortly after I started the Plaquenil (which has done very little but I am hopeful.)

I was curious to know if anyone has had success with the Plaquenil? Or if anybody has recieved UVA-1 light therapy? The light therapy is hard to get because not many places carry the boxes for it.

Mermaidgirl:

I had the same dental problems, and they narrowed it down to the Norvasc I was taking for hight blood pressure. I guess it's a give and take in any given situation; just have to weigh the odds.

Hi Mermaidgirl,

I'm glad you've joined us, but sorry you have linear/morphea.

I'm not certain (I'm not a doctor, I have no medical training) but I haven't yet found an online reference to plaquenil causing gingivitis (the "plaque" in the name of plaquenil does not refer to dental plaque, of course). In fact, it is often used for Sjogren's syndrome and scleroderma. Perhaps you could ask your dental care provider to help you narrow down the actual cause of it?

Here's the link to a Mayo Clinic article on the Causes of Gingivitis: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gingiviti...0363/DSECTION=3 which I hope you find helpful.

Hi Mermaidgirl,

I wish you weren't having the troubles you are... but if it is as such, so many have already let you know... you are at our site and IOHOs :D , this is a good place to get information.

We do our best to help one another, if for nothing else (should we not share the same illnesses)... support and caring.

I wish you the best there is to offer!

Hugs,

Susie

Hi mermaildgirl and welcome.

As you can see by the previous posts, this is a great place for support and friendship.

Do you mind me asking why you stopped the Plaquenil? Was it because you thought it was causing the gingivitis? I am curious because I just started taking it about 2 weeks ago.
