Does anyone know where I could find exercises to help stretch the mouth? I've read about them. I just can't find any!!!

Thanks,

Christy (Purr)

Hi Christy,

The mouth exercises are very easy! Please keep in mind I'm just a patient, without any medical training at all, and I can only tell you what has helped me.

Just form the letters of the entire alphabet, making very large, exaggerated motions -- at least, as large as you can manage. That exercises, and stretches, all of the muscles of the mouth.

Only do them once a day at first, and not too vigorously (so you don't strain any of the muscles too much, you want to combat this gently but consistently, not forcefully or aggressively.)

Then build up at our own pace to doing them three times a day (while preparing meals is a good way to remember) if you are experiencing (or think you are experiencing; in the initial stages sometimes it is hard to tell for sure) tightening in the mouth. Also be sure to consult your doctor so they are aware of the possible mouth involvement and so they can prescribe treatments/exercises or occupational therapy most suitable for you.

See our section on Microstomia (which mean "small mouth").

Hi,

Here are other ideas.

1. puff your cheeks out and hold for 5 sec

2. stretch your lips over your teeth

3. push your lips from side to side

4. tilt your head back and open and close your jaw(good adam's apple stretch )

5. stick your tounge out as far as you can and move it side to side

6. open your mouth as wide as you can and hold 5 sec

Warm and gentle hugs,

Thanks Shelley and Sweet! I'll get started on those this evening. My mouth isn't too bad yet, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to start doing the exercises before it does get bad. Up til now all I've been doing is making a fish face (pucker and then open wide).

I'll have to try them when my brother is around and see what kind of a reaction I get.

Thanks again,

Christy - Purr
