Fried Green Tomatoes

I know that the word "fried" is probably a no-no, but I let myself make these once, maybe twice in the fall. They are just too good and life is too short.

 

4 medium to large green tomatoes (make sure that they haven't started to turn. If a tomato shows any sign of starting to turn, skip it.)

1/2 flour

2 eggs

1 cup cornmeal

salt and pepper

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 T Worcestershire Sauce

4 - 6 cups canola oil (depends on size of frying pan. I use a cast iron dutch oven as my frying pan.)

 

Slice the green tomatoes into 1/2" slices. (You might want to slice about 1/4" off the bottom of the tomato and discard. The batter has a hard time sticking to the skin.)

Pour the canola oil in the frying pan and start to heat over medium to high heat.

Put the 1/2 cup flour in a cereal bowl and mix in some salt and pepper.

Beat the 2 eggs in another cereal bowl with 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce.

Put the cornmeal in a pie pan with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix.

 

To test the oil temperature, drop a little of the cornmeal into the oil. If it sizzles, it's ready.

 

Drip a tomato slice into the flour and lightly coat with flour. Dip it into the egg and get a good coating. Dip into the cornmeal. Tap off excess. Place in oil. Fry about 2 -3 minutes per side or until the cornmeal is a golden brown.

 

Place a couple of papertowels in a wide salad bowl. Place cooked tomatoes vertically on papertowels to drain. You might test one to see if it's salty enough. I like to add a little salt when they are draining. Testing one also helps you judge to see if you need more or less cooking time. I like the texture to be a little firm (but not crisp) rather than mushy.

Yum!

 

The Pennsylvania Dutch version flours the tomatoes and fries them in (don't faint) bacon fat. We usually season the flour with salt and sweet paprika powder.

 

This is a once/twice a year treat around here too.

 

And just to freak people out entirely, you can make an apple pie out of green tomatoes too. Slice them, toss them with flour, then layer them in a pie crust, sprinkling well with sugar and a bit of cinnamon. Put the top crust on and bake as usual.

 

Kissin' wears out, but cookin' don't.

Hellooooz Janey!

 

You 2 J's could put out quite the Greenie Picnic! "Jeannie the Greenie" could make the desert, I would bring the Colcannon! Made it yesterday for the first time, now that was awesome!!!

 

My dry eyeballs just about popped outa my head reading Jeannie's Greenie Pie desert, I'd have to be 1/2 cut to try that one!

I grew up eating fried green tomatoes (Pennsylvania Dutch version since my family is from PA) and I miss those things... just reading the recipe is making me drool! Just dredged in flour with salt and pepper then fried in a cast iron skillet with (yeppers) bacon fat. This was from a generation of farmers who drank gravy with every meal and needed those extra calories and grams of fat to work from sun up to sun down in the fields.

 

As for the green tomato 'mock' apple pie, I remember those as well, along with green tomato jelly, green tomato soup and green tomato bread. (Country folk, nothing goes to waste!)

What planet am I from, NEVER heard of eating Green Tomatoes in any way shape or form before , We have the hole picnic now, fried tomatoes, Greenie Soup, greenie Pie for desert!

Sorry , just can't see green, now Ive heard it all! ;)

I'll add a couple more to the list.

 

My mother (a farm girl) use to make green tomato relish and pickled green tomatoes - quite yummy. When I moved to the southwest and learned how to make tomatillo green chile sauce, I've been known to substitute small green tomatoes for the tomatillos.

 

Oh - I hear the question - What's a TOMATILLO? Well, it's basically a small green tomato with a husk. It's used in a lot of mexican and New Mexican dishes.

 

Oh yes - growing up, we too used the bacon drippings for frying. It did lead to a very tasty fried food, but it also lead to lots of belly fat and clogged arteries. Today I use pretty much all canola, peanut or olive oil. Just out of habit, I still save the bacon drippings and cheat every once in a great while.

Green Tomato bread? Penny!

 

Hmmm mmm Yikers Maybe with some of Janey's homemade Green tomato RELISH? You Girls are killing me! It must have been created when times were tough- really REALLY Tough! I am tellin ya we throw the green ones at the end of season, get chucked DIRECTLY into the COMPOST, wouldn't even think to eat them. I don't care how those greenies can be manipulated into recipe's (so can snails) but I ain't goin' there too!

 

And Ya Janey you got me instantly on the "Tomillos husky" thingy's, my eyes hit the computer screen, sounds about as yummy as the other greenies, to think we are even on the same continent! I will bring my own bread, soup, and real apple pie to the picnic. Thanks

 

PS. I might even bring you each a loaf NORMAL bread (my gift)

Oh wait a minute my neighbor is at the door............she saw a movie called Green Tomatoes!!!!! I gotta go take a NAP!

Oh just one more PS. Just so you all know ,I will never look at a red tomatoe the same way again!

Sandra... please tell me that you have at least heard of zuchini relish, zuchini jelly, zuchini bread and fried zuchini?

 

Like those green tomato recipes, there is nothing that can't be done with those giant green squash (other than sneaking out in the dead of night to leave baskets of them on unsuspecting neighbor's door steps!)

Goodmorning Penny!

Slept in today, :VeryHappy: woke up at 4:30,layed there thinking about "you girls" and was wondering, At 49 , I thought I pretty much heard it all when it came to food, Wrong, since I joined this site, I have had Thrills , Chills , Shocks , Tears ,Releif ,Joy ...........

Oh did I mention Blown away, Gheez, I am sorry "Greenie Gang" but this subject floored me, Talked with a friend yesterday and she said she saw a movie about Green Tomatoes! I am going to get that movie.. She is with me on this subject. I think the further down south you go, the more things Hmm "change" to the left when it comes to food.

Example, "Janey's Grits" I was curious about that one so I went trucking around looking for homminy corn, Asked the store manager for help finding it, he lowered his glasses to the tip of his nose and lowerd his head and eye balls looking up at me over his glasses (puzzled) I explained to him that I want to make GRITS, Removed his glasses and said "HUH?" I told him the story- we Laughed so hard my dry eyes teared! He said why don't I try regular corn? Can I ?

Penny I have tried "Chocolate Zuchini loaf" on a farm in Saskatchewan , Once- that was strange too, I chaulked it up, that rural farmers eat just about anything!

If so - "lets be honest Suzie", what did you think, would you rate what you ate a 10 being great or 1 not digestable?

All this talk about grits and I just had to have some for breakfast this morning. Cooked up some quick grits, added a little green chile and butter and it warmed me up instantly. The hubby puts a fried egg on top. I don't like that, but to each his own.

 

Sandra, I sent you a link for ordering grits online. If you do try them, be sure to put enough salt in them and then butter or cheese. When I was growing up my mother use to dish the grits into our bowls, then put a large tab of butter on top. Yummy!

Sandra, you should be able to find Grits in the breakfast, cooked hot cereal section of your grocery store. They would be next to things like oatmeal, cream of wheat, malto meal. Grits are refined you won't be getting puffs of corn to cook. It looks like large cream of wheat but much whiter. Regular Hominy is with green beans and corn canned goods. It is boiled kernels of corn. They puff up and turn white like popped corn. It is pre-hulled and boiled kernels. You buy it already in a can ready to re-heat. Try again looking in the grocery store and I bet you will find what we have been talking about.

OK, Sandra, yet more greenies: green tomato picalilly, green tomato chutney, and green tomato chili. I'm sure there are more. We'll have you eating greenies one of these days! emoticons-yes.gif

 

The last one isn't like Janey's, which is meatless. This one uses green tomatoes cut into chunks, diced onions, diced green bell peppers, and as many diced up hot green chilies as your tummy can stand. You fry up hamburger (mince) or ground lamb, as much as you want, add it to the other stuff with maybe a quarter cup of water in a heavy pot, cover tightly and let stew over low heat until the veggies are nice and tender. Season with salt. We serve it over rice. It's sooo good!

 

There are also endless different ways of keeping your green tomatoes long enough to ripen off the vine. I've got the last of mine on newspaper in the garage, but some people swear by taking the whole plant, with the greenies still on it, and hanging it upside down somewhere it won't freeze.

 

We don't have grits too much in the northeast of the USA, but we PA Dutch do have mush, so don't feel too sorry for us. That's just ordinary cornmeal cooked much like grits. You can have it hot and runny with lots of butter and salt, but you can also put it in a loaf pan and let it set up. Then you turn it out and fry it up in (let's hear it, louder, louder) yeah! bacon fat!! We also have scrapple, which is ground scraps from pork butchering that are cooked up with the cornmeal or in some places, a mix of buckwheat flour and cornmeal. That one is always fried and it's both a breakfast and supper dish. Penny will know it well.

We always have a keg at our parties, makes the goodies go down a little easier. In fact, it seems to go first and we always have a lot of food left over, everyone always brings too much. rolleyes.gif

 

For those who missed our last really big party, check out Virtual New Year's Party. We had it at Shelley's. I'm not real sure she wants to host this year's get-together, she sounded kind of reluctant when I asked her.
