Safety tip

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I just wanted to post and let you all in on a helpful tip that I learned from volunteering at a retirement home. One of my tasks was to soak and peel all of the medication lables off of the bottles. At first I couldn't see the purpose for this, but as it turnes out, there are many ways that strangers can take that personal info and use it in negative ways.

Those lables contain our full name, pharmacy number, RX number and of course the med that you are taking along with the dose.

This does take a little extra time, but I think it is so important that we keep our identity safe these days. I save up until I have about 6 empty bottles, and then just let them soak in water for about an hour in a bowl. The lable usually peels right off, then I shred them.

:fairy: Best Wishes,

West Coast, you may get several responses from this. I have always used a razor blade to remove my labels. We usually find other uses for the bottles so that is pretty quick and easy for us. Then just take scissors and cut up the label. This was a very good idea to throw out to everyone. People who recycle won't have their names going everywhere through the trash. Also take a marker and wipe out your address on magazines, or just cut your name off before giving it to others.

Strength and Warmth,

Hi WestCoast

What a valuable tip to give out; I'm in the UK & we always shred absolutely everything we get through the post with our name & address on. I too prise labels off medicine bottles & packets as we have a rather natty little gadget that shreds everything to a fine pulp.

It's awful to be so paranoid but sadly these days there are so many cases of identity theft & worse that I feel we can't afford to give anyone an easy ride. :(

Kind regards x

You can sometimes peel the label off more easily if you warm it gently. I lay my pill containers label side down on one of those microwaveable rice bag-warmers for about half a minute and then start at a corner of the label. We have uses for the containers too, but when I build up a stock and don't want anymore, my pharmacist/chemist will take them back and put them through the special shredder at the shop.

Great tip! Thanks for starting the thread.
