July 2017 Autoimmune News

Randomised controlled trial of prolonged treatment in the remission phase of ANCA–associated vasculitis (AAV). Prolonged remission maintenance therapy with azathioprine/prednisolone, beyond 24 months after diagnosis, reduces relapse risk out to 48 months and improves renal survival in AAV. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 05/25/2017. (Also see Vasculitis)

Impaired Pain Modulation in Fibromyalgia Patients in Response to Social Distress Manipulation. These results are in line with previous studies demonstrating altered pain inhibition in FM patients, and suggest that being socially included may increase pain perception in them. PubMed, Clin J Pain, 2017 Jul;33(7):611-619. (Also see Fibromyalgia)

Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT), anti–thyroid antibodies and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There is a two–fold increased risk of HT in SLE patients, Anti–SM antibodies favor this association and also double antibody positivity. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 05/25/2017. (Also see Antibodies in Lupus and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis)

miR-210 expression in PBMCs from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The dysregulation of miR-210 levels in SLE and RA patients suggests that miR-210 might play an important role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. PubMed, Ir J Med Sci, 05/30/2017. (Also see Lupus Research and Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Balancing the autonomic nervous system to reduce inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Vagus nerve stimulation significantly inhibited tumor necrosis factor and IL-6 production and improved RA disease severity, even in some patients with therapy–resistant disease. PubMed, J Intern Med, 05/26/2017. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Beta-2 Microglobulin in Whole Unstimulated Saliva (sB2M) Can Effectively Distinguish Between Sjögren’s Syndrome (SS) and Non–Autoimmune Sicca Symptoms. In our setting, sB2M effectively distinguished between SS patients and non–autoimmune sicca symptoms and including sB2M in our conventional diagnostic arsenal may assist in the evaluation of patients in whom SS is suspected. Archives of Rheumatology, 06/08/2017. (Also see Diagnosis of Sjögren's Syndrome)

Relationship Between Smoking and Structural Damage, Autoimmune Antibodies, and Disability in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients. There was no correlation between disease activity and smoking in our study and smoking does not appear to correlate with RA disease activity but it may be effective in the long–term joint damage. Archives of Rheumatology, 06/08/2017. (Also see Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Expression of CCR6 on B cells in systemic lupus erythematosus patients. Pre–germinal centre B cells are found in lower proportions and the expression of CCR6 is increased on B cells of SLE patients, suggesting a role for the chemokine pair in the pathogenesis of the disease. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2017 Jun;36(6):1453-1456. (Also see Causes of Lupus and B Cells and T Cells)

Long–term diabetes complications after pancreas transplantation. In patients with type 1 diabetes, pancreas transplantation may improve cardiac outcomes and ameliorate diabetic lesions in the kidney transplant. PubMed, Curr Opin Organ Transplant, 06/08/2017. (Also see Treatments for Diabetes)

Novel serum biomarkers differentiate psoriatic arthritis (PsA) from psoriasis without psoriatic arthritis (PsC). There is a high prevalence of undiagnosed PsA in psoriasis patients and identifying soluble biomarkers for PsA will help in screening PsC patients for appropriate rheumatology referral. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 06/06/2017. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis)
