April 2018 Autoimmune News

Ear, nose and throat involvement in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA): how it presents and how it determines disease severity and long–term outcomes. Our data confirms that ENT involvement is not only one of the key clinical features of GPA, but also could point out a milder GPA subset with lower renal involvement and lower mortality rate, irrespectively to ANCA status. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol 02/20/2018. (Also see Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis)

Red Blood Cell Distribution Width Can Predict Vasculitis Activity and Poor Prognosis in Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA). RDW predicts vasculitis activity in GPA, and =RDW 15.4% at diagnosis may increase the risk of severe GPA at diagnosis and predict refractory diseases during follow-up. PubMed, Yonsei Med J, 2018 Mar;59(2):294-302. (Also see Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis)

Many UK Lupus Patients Face Three–year Diagnosis Delay, Study Reports. It took more than three years for 1,000 Britons with lupus, scleroderma and vasculitis to obtain a correct diagnosis after their symptoms began, a study shows. Lupus News, 03/09/2018. (Also see Diagnosis of Lupus)

Combination therapy of anabolic agents and bisphosphonates on bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with osteoporosis: a meta–analysis of randomised controlled trials. Compared with anabolic monotherapy, the concomitant combination therapy of anabolic agents and bisphosphonates significantly improved the BMD at the total hip and femoral neck. PubMed, BMJ Open, 2018 Mar 1;8(3):e015187. (Also see Osteoporosis)

Residual disease activity (RDA) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated with subcutaneous biologic drugs that achieved remission or low disease activity (LDA). RDA in RA was present even in patients with remission or LDA, especially for the patient's reported outcome and impaired function was also present in a significantly rate of patients. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 02/21/2018. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Biologic Agents)

Subclinical impairment of myocardial and endothelial functionality in very early psoriatic (PsA) and rheumatoid arthritis patients: Association with vitamin D and inflammation. Disease activity was the main predictor of myocardial strain impairment and myocardial function was altered and associated with carotid intima-media thickness. Atherosclerosis, 03/06/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis)

CT Features of the Usual Interstitial Pneumonia (UIP) Pattern: Differentiating Connective Tissue Disease–Associated Interstitial Lung Disease (CTD–ILD) From Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Although UIP is usually associated with IPF, the index of suspicion for CTD-ILD should be raised in the care of patients with any of the three CT signs. PubMed, AJR Am J Roentgenol, 2018 Feb;210(2):307-313. (Also see Correlation between Pulmonary Fibrosis and other Diseases)

Prevalence and type II diabetes–associated factors in psoriatic arthritis. Results suggested that diabetes was notably related to late–onset psoriasis and hypertension and the risk of diabetes ought to be evaluated carefully in subjects whose psoriasis begins after 40 years. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 02/22/2018. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Symptoms and Complications of Diabetes)

Novel gene variants associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The IL19 risk allele was associated with stroke/MI in SLE and RA, but not in the general population, indicating that shared immune pathways may be involved in the CVD pathogenesis in inflammatory rheumatic diseases. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 03/07/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Case Report: Following leads: connecting dysphagia to mixed connective tissue disease. High–dose corticosteroids and methotrexate were given with little improvement, followed by intravenous immunoglobulin with progressive remission of symptoms. PubMed, BMJ Case Rep, 2018 Mar 5;2018. (Also see Mixed Connective Tissue Disease)

SCLERO.ORG was the world's leading nonprofit for trustworthy research, support, education and awareness for scleroderma and related illnesses from 1998 to 2021. It was a grassroots movement from the original Scleroderma from A to Z web site, which was founded by Shelley Ensz. We were a 501(c)(3) U.S.-based public charitable foundation. We closed this web site and our nonprofit agency in April 2021.
