May 2018 Autoimmune News

Adding Prefrontal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Before Occipital Nerve Stimulation (ONS) in Fibromyalgia. This study suggests that adding right–anode bifrontal tDCS to ONS has no added benefit in improving fibromyalgia–related symptoms. PubMed, Clin J Pain, 2018 May;34(5):421-427. (Also see Treatments for Fibromyalgia)

Association between memory B–cells and clinical and immunological features of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and Sicca patients. It remains to be clarified whether Sicca patients with decreased memory B–cells represent pSS and if B–cell profiling could help in the diagnosis of pSS. PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 04/06/2018. (Also see Sjögren's Syndrome Research)

Resveratrol (RSV) as an effective adjuvant therapy in the management of rheumatoid arthritis: a clinical study. It was found that the clinical markers and the disease activity score assessment for 28 joints were significantly lowered in the RSV–treated group. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 04/03/2018. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: Association with disease activity, disease damage and age. The frequency of MetS was not significantly different from that of the control group, but almost half of the patients were found with this syndrome. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 04/03/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Sputum Anticitrullinated Protein Antibodies in Patients With Long–standing Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Anticitrullinated protein/peptide antibodies can be detected in the sputum of RA patients and are correlated with the presence in the serum. PubMed, J Clin Rheumatol, 2018 Apr;24(3):122-126. (Also see Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Precision medicine using different biological DMARDs based on characteristic phenotypes of peripheral T helper cells in psoriatic arthritis. Strategic treatment in which different bDMARDs were selected according to phenotypic differences in helper T cells showed significantly higher efficacy. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 04/02/2018. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Biologic Agents)

Low Doses of Etanercept (ETN) Can Be Effective to Maintain Remission in Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) Patients. The main reasons that hinder the dosing interval increase in ETN in PsA patients are peripheral polyarthritis pattern and exacerbation of cutaneous manifestations. PubMed, J Clin Rheumatol, 2018 Apr;24(3):127-131. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Biologic Agents)

Safety and efficacy of alternate–day corticosteroid treatment (QOD CS) as adjunctive therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) : a comparative study. QOD CS treatment leads to a lower infection rate and less CS dependence than does daily treatment and both RA treatments are equally effective. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 03/26/2018. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Clinical characteristics of autoimmune rheumatic disease–related organizing pneumonia (AIRD–OP). Compared with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia patients, AIRD–OP patients are characterized with occult onset but more severe lung involvement and higher recurrence rate. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2018 Apr;37(4):1027-1035. (Also see Lung Involvement)

The interaction between environmental triggers and epigenetics in autoimmunity. Reactive oxygen species that inhibit Dnmt1 upregulation, and a diet poor in methyl donors, combine to cause lupus in animal models. PubMed, Clin Immunol, 04/09/2018. (Also see Causes of Lupus)
