December 2018 Autoimmune News

Renal involvement in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS): a prospective cohort study. Renal involvement in pSS is under–recognized with the most common manifestation being renal tubular acidosis presenting with hypokalemic paralysis. PubMed, Rheumatol Int, 2018 Dec;38(12):2251-2262. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Sjögren's Syndrome)

Intrauterine fetal deaths (IUFD) related to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS): a descriptive study of 65 women. IUFD was most often the inaugural sign of APS and of the APS classification criteria, IUFD, preeclampsia, and thromboses were common in this cohort. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther, 2018 Nov 6;20(1):249. (Also see Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Clinical profiles and risk assessment in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). Further studies, particularly prospective randomized controlled trials, are highly warranted to establish an effective and tolerable treatment regimen for high risk aPL carriers. PubMed, Expert Rev Clin Immunol, 11/01/2018. (Also see Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Triple Positivity for Anti–Citrullinated Protein Autoantibodies (ACPAs), Rheumatoid Factor (RF), and Anti–Carbamylated Protein Antibodies (anti–carP) Conferring High Specificity for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Implications for Very Early Identification of At–Risk Individuals. An autoantibody profile of triple positivity for ACPAs, RF and anti–CarP provides interesting information that might help identify individuals at risk of developing RA. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 2018 Nov;70(11):1721-1731. (Also see Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Association of galectin-3 with markers of myocardial function, atherosclerosis and vascular fibrosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Serum galectin-3 might be useful as a marker of cardiac function and cardiovascular fibrosis in RA patients with low–grade systemic inflammation and long–standing disease. PubMed, Clin Cardiol, 10/23/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Serum–soluble folate receptor β (sFRβ) as a biomarker for the activity of rheumatoid arthritis synovitis and the response to anti-TNF agents. The findings support that high serum sFRβ levels act as a predictive biomarker for the response to anti-TNF agents. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2018 Nov;37(11):2939-2945. (Also see Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Hormone therapy and osteoporosis in breast cancer survivors: assessment of risk and adherence to screening recommendations. The natural, age–related reduction in bone density is exacerbated by breast cancer active aromatase inhibitors treatment. PubMed, Osteoporos Int, 11/09/2018. (Also see Cancer and Osteoporosis)

Early predictors of one–year mortality in patients over 65 presenting with ANCA–associated renal vasculitis: a retrospective, multicentre study. A reduction in immunosuppression, the early detection of infections, and co–trimoxazole prophylaxis might help to reduce mortality in this population. PubMed, BMC Nephrol, 2018 Nov 9;19(1):317. (Also see Vasculitis)

Potential Role of Cytochrome c and Tryptase in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Pathogenesis: Focus on Resistance to Apoptosis and Oxidative Stress. The cytochrome c release into the extracellular space and tryptase may have a role in skin and joint inflammation. PubMed, Front Immunol, 2018 Oct 30;9:2363. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Oxidative Stress)

Association of Psoriasis With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta–analysis. These findings suggest that psoriasis is significantly associated with IBD and gastroenterology consultation may be indicated when patients with psoriasis present with bowel symptoms. PubMed, JAMA Dermatol, 10/24/2018. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease)

SCLERO.ORG was the world's leading nonprofit for trustworthy research, support, education and awareness for scleroderma and related illnesses from 1998 to 2021. It was a grassroots movement from the original Scleroderma from A to Z web site, which was founded by Shelley Ensz. We were a 501(c)(3) U.S.-based public charitable foundation. We closed this web site and our nonprofit agency in April 2021.
