January 2019 Autoimmune News

Predicting outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis related interstitial lung disease (RAILD). The combination of two visual computed tomography–based staging systems identified 23% of an RAILD cohort with an IPF–like progressive fibrotic phenotype. PubMed, Eur Respir J, 11/28/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Connective Tissue Disease: Current Concepts. Many of these updates promise to improve clinical care of patients who suffer from dermatologic involvement of these diseases and are the result of research performed by dermatologists. PubMed, Dermatol Clin, 2019 Jan;37(1):37-48. (Also see Connective Tissue Disease)

Association of Depression With Risk of Incident Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) in Women Assessed Across 2 Decades. This study contributes to increasing evidence that depression may be associated with increased risk of SLE. PubMed, JAMA Psychiatry, 2018 Dec 1;75(12):1225-1233. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus and Depression)

The risks of cancer development in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients: a systematic review and meta–analysis. This comprehensive meta–analysis provides epidemiological evidence supporting the associations between SLE and cancer risk. BMC Journals, Arthritis Research & Therapy, 12/06/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus and Cancer)

Improved patient–reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) treated with abatacept: results from a phase 3 trial. Abatacept treatment improved PROs in patients with PsA versus placebo, with better results in elevated baseline C-reactive protein and tumour necrosis factor inhibitor– na├»ve subpopulations. BMC Journals, Arthritis Research & Therapy, 12/06/2018. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Biologic Agents)

Association between autophagy and inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) receiving biologic therapy. Elevated autophagy with significant correlation to inflammation suggests the involvement of autophagy in RA pathogenesis. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther, 2018 Dec 5;20(1):268. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Biologic Agents)

Diastolic dysfunction (DD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with low disease activity. The prevalence of DD as expressed by E/A ratio in RA patients with continued low disease activity was not different from that of controls. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 12/12/2018. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

The effect of statin use on mortality in systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD). In this study, statin initiation was shown to reduce overall mortality in patients with SARD after adjusting for relevant determinates of cardiovascular disease risk. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2018 Dec;45(12):1689-1695. (Also see Statins)

The relationship between type 1 IFN and vasculopathy in anti-MDA5 antibody–positive dermatomyositis (DM) patients. The high T1-IFN signatures of the MDA5 antibody–positive DM patients in serum and deep vasculatures suggested that T1-IFN may have important roles in the vasculopathy of these patients. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 12/11/2018. (Also see Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis)

The Effect of Pregnancy on Disease Activity in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis. Continuation of biologics therapy was associated with a low level of disease activity and a low probability of flare during pregnancy. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2018 Dec;45(12):1651-1655. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Biologic Agents)
