March 2019 Autoimmune News

Gene–function studies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The work discussed in this review has broad implications for our understanding of the pathogenesis of SLE and for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. PubMed, Curr Opin Rheumatol, 2019 Mar;31(2):185-192. (Also see Causes of Lupus)

Apoptosis in patients with primary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (pAPS). There was a trend toward elevated plasma levels of sTRAIL, IL-10 and TNF-a, but no evidence for dysregulated apoptosis in pAPS patients. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 02/06/2019. (Also see Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Prognostic nutritional index is associated with disease severity and relapse in ANCA–associated vasculitis. Prognostic nutritional index at diagnosis might be useful for assessing disease severity and predicting the prognosis of AAV patients. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 02/06/2019. (Also see Vasculitis)

Effects of Vitamin D on disease activity and serum interleukin-6 in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study suggests that vitamin D is not associated with disease activity or serum IL-6 levels but it may have a role in functional disability in RA patients. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 02/06/2019. (Also see Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Vitamin D)

Diagnostic value of anti–citrullinated fibrinogen antibody in rheumatoid arthritis (RA): A meta–analysis. The ACF antibody had a moderate diagnostic accuracy on RA. PubMed, Int J Rheum Dis, 02/06/2019. (Also see Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Fibromyalgia (FM) as a Predictor of Increased Postoperative Complications, Readmission Rates, and Hospital Costs in Patients Undergoing Posterior Lumbar Spine Fusion. Primary 1 to 2 level lumbar fusions performed on FM patients have higher rates of postoperative anemia, pneumonia, cost of care, and readmission compared to match controls. PubMed, Spine (Phila Pa 1976), 2019 Feb 15;44(4):E233-E238. (Also see Fibromyalgia)

Dietary interventions in Fibromyalgia (FM): a systematic review. Well–designed studies should be performed to investigate the dietary interventions effect on FM. PubMed, Ann Med, 2019 Feb 8:1-29. (Also see Fibromyalgia)

Usefulness of composite indices in the assessment of joint involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients: correlation with ultrasonographic score. We suggest the ability of composite indices in detecting SLE joint inflammation and their possible real–life use. PubMed, Lupus, 2019 Feb 11:961203319828527. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Investigating asthma, allergic disease, passive smoke exposure, and risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Asthma and allergies may be associated with increased risk of RA, although passive smoke exposure and earlier age of starting smoking do not appear to influence risk of RA. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 02/12/2019. (Also see Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Asthma)

Incidence and predictors of aorta calcification in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Systemic lupus erythematosus patients had a much earlier onset and higher incidences of aorta calcium than coronary artery calcification. PubMed, Lupus, 2019 Feb 10:961203319826689. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)
