March 2020 Autoimmune News

Aberrant salience? Brain hyperactivation in response to pain onset and offset in fibromyalgia (FM). Our results suggest that the increased sensitivity exhibited by FM patients in response to painful stimuli may reflect a more generalized hypersensitivity to salient sensory events. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 02/03/2020. (Also see Fibromyalgia)

Differential expression of the inflammasome complex genes in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The data in this investigation emphasized once more the important contribution of inflammasome in SLE-associated inflammation. PubMed, Immunogenetics, 02/05/2020. (Also see Causes of Lupus)

Maternal hypertensive disorders (HDP) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pregnancy and future cardiovascular outcomes. In women with and without SLE, HDP were associated with a three-fold higher rate of hypertension. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 01/31/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Angiotensin II receptor agonist antibodies (AT1R-AAs) are associated with microvascular damage in lupus nephritis (LN). AT1R-AAs are prevalent in active LN patients and are associated with histologic features of microvascular damage. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Feb 10:961203320904787. (Also see Antibodies in Lupus)

Association between vitamin D and fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA): a cross-sectional study. This cross-sectional study found no evidence of association between vitamin D and fatigue in patients with RA. PubMed, BMJ Open, 2020 Feb 6;10(2):e034935. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Vitamin D)

Vaginal dryness in primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS): a histopathological case-control study. Vaginal dryness in primary SS might be caused by vascular dysfunction, possibly induced by interferon-mediated pathways. PubMed, Rheumatology (Oxford), 02/11/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Sjögren's Syndrome)

Type 2 Polarized T Cell Phenotype is Associated with Methotrexate (MTX) Non-response in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). MTX-non-responsive RA patients exhibit a bias towards type 2-polarized T cell inflammatory responses. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 02/10/2020. (Also see Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Immunosuppressants and B Cells and T Cells)

Remission in psoriatic arthritis: Definition and predictors. The use of biologic agents increased not only the chance of remission, but also the chance of sustained remission for at least 12 months. Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, 02/03/2020. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis and Biologic Agents)

Factors associated with the contemplative stage of readiness to initiate osteoporosis treatment. For women at high risk for future fractures, ensuring women's recognition of their diagnosis of osteoporosis/osteopenia and addressing their concerns about osteoporosis are critical components to consider. PubMed, Osteoporos Int, 02/04/2020. (Also see Osteoporosis)

The association between irritable bowel syndrome and osteoporosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis. A significantly increased risk of osteoporosis among IBS patients was observed in this study. PubMed, Osteoporos Int, 02/01/2020. (Also see Bowel Dysfunction and Osteoporosis)
