April 2020 Autoimmune News

Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Subsequent Risk for Incident Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) among Women: A Prospective Cohort Study. Asthma and COPD were each associated with increased risk for incident RA, independent of smoking status/intensity and other potential confounders. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 03/04/2020. (Also see Asthma and Rheumatoid Arthritis in Overlap)

Micro-structural bone changes are associated with broad-spectrum autoimmunity and predict the onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Microstructural changes in RA at-risk individuals are associated with broad-spectrum autoimmunity and predict the onset of RA. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 02/18/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related osteoporosis is associated with incident frailty among patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD): a propensity score-matched cohort study. CKD-related osteoporosis is associated with a higher risk of incident frailty in patients with DKD. PubMed, Osteoporos Int, 02/27/2020. (Also see Osteoporosis and Symptoms and Complications of Diabetes)

Endothelial and inflammatory biomarker profile at diagnosis reflects clinical heterogeneity of juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) and is prognostic for response to treatment in two independent cohorts. This study confirms the heterogeneity of new-onset JDM using serum biomarkers. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 02/26/2020. (Also see Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis)

Low Incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Adverse Events (IBD AEs) in Adalimumab Clinical Trials Across Nine Different Diseases. The rates of IBD AEs in adalimumab clinical trials were generally low across the evaluated diseases and all events occurred in adult patients. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 02/26/2020. (Also see Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Biologic Agents)

Unbalanced Sphingolipid Metabolism and Its Implications for the Pathogenesis of Psoriasis. The significance of SLs as structural and signalling molecules and their actions in inflammation are discussed. PubMed, Molecules, 2020 Mar 3;25(5). (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis)

Transplant outcomes in kidney recipients with lupus nephritis (LN), and systematic review. Kidney transplantation is an acceptable option in patients with concurrent LN and end-stage renal disease. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Mar;29(3):248-255. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus and Kidney Transplant)

Profiling of non-criteria antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): differentiation of thrombotic SLE patients and risk of recurrence of thrombosis. Profiling of antiphospholipid antibodies by line immunoassay can differentiate SLE patients with thrombosis from SLE patients without thrombosis. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Mar 4:961203320909952. (Also see Antibodies in Lupus and Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Is hypoxia a factor in the progression of pulmonary sarcoidosis? Recent data suggest an involvement of the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) in the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis. PubMed, Rev Mal Respir, 03/04/2020. (Also see Sarcoidosis)

Gastric sarcoidosis: Rare revealing feature of systemic sarcoidosis. Other granulomatous diseases need to be excluded especially infectious diseases before establishing the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. PubMed, Arab J Gastroenterol, 02/27/2020. (Also see Sarcoidosis)
