June 2020 Autoimmune News

Radioscapholunate arthrodesis versus radiolunate arthrodesis in rheumatoid wrist surgery: clinical and radiographic outcomes. Our results have shown that radiolunate arthrodesis remains a reliable surgical procedure for advanced rheumatoid wrist. PubMed, Hand Surg Rehabil, 04/22/2020. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Study on the relationship between hyperthyroidism and vascular endothelial cell damage. Hyperthyroidism can damage the vascular endothelium and is a high-risk factor for cardio-cerebrovascular disease. PubMed, Sci Rep, 2020 Apr 24;10(1):6992. (Also see Graves' Disease and Vascular Involvement)

A Population-based Study of Risk Factors for Heart Failure in Pediatric and Adult-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Hypertension remains an important traditional cardiovascular risk factor across all ages and should be managed aggressively even in younger patients with SLE. Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, 05/03/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Serum calprotectin: a promising biomarker in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). This large study supports the association of serum calprotectin levels with disease activity in both RA and axSpA, but not in psoriatic arthritis. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther, 2020 May 6;22(1):105. (Also see Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Implication of baseline levels and early changes of C-reactive protein (CRP) for subsequent clinical outcomes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with tocilizumab (TCZ) . Baseline CRP appears to have a positive association with reaching the therapeutic target on TCZ treatment. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 05/05/2020. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Management of Fatigue in Rheumatoid Arthritis. More research is needed to understand fatigue and how to treat this common complex symptom in RA that can be the worst symptom for some patients. PubMed, RMD Open, 2020 May;6(1). (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Baseline use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in systemic lupus erythematosus does not preclude SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19. These efficacy data establish that patients with lupus on baseline therapy with HCQ are not universally protected from COVID-19. BMJ Journals, Ann Rheum Dis, 05/07/2020. (Also see Treatments for Lupus)

Effect of early eradication therapy on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) risk in patients with Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection: a nationwide population-based cohort study. Early HP eradication could significantly reduce SLE risk, especially in the first three-year follow-up. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 May 7:961203320923393. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Case Report: Brucella Pneumonia with Systemic Complications and Pancytopenia. The patient had systemic signs and bone marrow suppression with pulmonary involvement, but with treatment he had a very good outcome. PubMed, Infect Disord Drug Targets. (Also see Autoimmune Disease Directory)

Early clinical markers of aggressive multiple sclerosis. These findings suggest that older age at symptom onset, greater disability during the first year, and pyramidal signs in the first year are early indicators of aggressive multiple sclerosis. PubMed, Brain, 05/09/2020. (Also see Multiple Sclerosis)
